  1. poverty and suffering is also at an unacceptable level

  2. I’m not sure we really needed yet another inquiry to tell us something we already know

  3. Bang up job, we’d have never known this without an inquiry.

  4. In what sense is shoplifting unacceptable? It seems perfectly acceptable to politicians and the police.

  5. No shit, Sherlock.

Now do phone theft, bike theft and other effectively decriminalised crimes … if this is what it takes to start thinking about fixing it.

  6. “But people are just stealing to survive!”

No, dickheads in my shop clean us out of sirloin, duck, etc. I’d understand if it was just bread.

  7. Wow let’s do one to see if the number of pointless inquiries is unacceptable

  8. This just sucks all over.

It seems like in the cost of living crisis, shoplifting went up for “well I can’t shoplift my rent or my gas bill and i don’t have money for all 3” reasons, and then criminal gangs caught on to the fact that it wasn’t really something that people got caught and prosecuted for so why not organize that crime, and we’re at the far edge of the loop where the powers that be have their paperwork in order to do something serious about it, and i would bet pounds against pennies that the people who get ground up into nothing as part of the inevitable crackdown are going to be the incompetent solo shoplifters trying to nick off with food they can’t afford.

Like, there is clearly organized criminal shoplifting and need-based shoplifting and they’ll crush the latter more easily than the former.

  9. In Croydon the police won’t come out for shoplifting. The cafes around east Croydon are plagued by shoplifting, particularly the Pret. Staff call the police, no one comes.

The local councillor informed me that the police have refused to resource the Mayors request for enforcement/exclusion zones around the station. (And this councillor was a Labour councillor talking about the Tory mayor, so not one of the mayors own party making excuses).

If there’s no consequence to shoplifting, well guess what? More is going to happen.

  10. Lack of investment in public services .. found to be unacceptable by the entire country, common sense finds.

  11. But raising food prices to pay bonuses to rich people is acceptable. Nice.

  12. Ok?

So what are they gonna do about it except for nothing?

  13. I own a shop, and yes the stealing has gotten a bit mental recently.

I said when I took over that if I caught someone stealing food then not only would I let them have it, I would find something else they could have. There is one young lady who came to us when she needed help and now bless her, she’s on her feet and tells anyone who’ll listen how kind we are.

Can’t have kids going hungry. Have been there and just…no! Can’t do it!

Last week, I read a story on here about a thief. The general consensus on here was that this thief is a piece of shit. Yesterday morning I happened to look up from my work and see the thief that was on this fucking website last week, reach into a fridge, sneak a bottle of wine under her coat and just walk out. Stupid cunt looked right at me to see if I was watching her, which I was, and she still thought she could get away with it.

She is on bail for her previous crimes so I called the police. Turns out she isn’t very well liked by the police around here because…she was a cop until she lost her job 2 weeks ago for being a nasty scumbag thief.

I’m lost. Can’t trust my bosses, can’t trust my customers, can’t trust staff (all the previous ones stole from us) and now can’t trust the police. It’s fair to say we’re fucked!

  14. Any petty crime, like burglary, phone theft, mugging and antisocial behaviour is all at an unacceptable level, because there is almost no chance of being caught or prosecution…

  15. How about we introduce tills with people in them and make them scan groceries. That would confirm there was no fault play from the customer side.

  16. We don’t really need new laws. We need to enforce the the ones we have and that may well mean that we need many more prison places….maybe Rwanda has some lol

  17. Surely start prosecuting with a hefty fine that is automatically drawn off their wages/ benefits until fully paid. They’d soon stop if they were caught and fined £1000.

  18. I didn’t realise all the scum stealing from my supermarkets were starving. I hope they have enough tobacco, vodka and steak so survive the winter months 🙏

  19. Is there a shoplifting level which is acceptable?

They need to increase penalties for doing this, clearly the risk is worth the reward to shoplifters

  20. My partner works at Tesco and they don’t even have security anymore. They expect the staff to be able to stop thieving from happening by just talking to them. The police won’t even come anymore unless it’s 1000s worth of goods. And even then the staff can’t hold the people in store until the police arrive.

I’m all for turning a blind eye when it’s someone who genuinely needs some baby milk or bread or something but people do take the piss with booze and all that. It’s a weird time in retail.

  21. This thread is making me realise that instead of risking my ass to steal food, I can just steal something worth a lot and sell it so I can buy food with the money it gets me. Thanks guys.

  22. We seem to be facing a choice between being a law abiding and orderly society, and one where criminality is tolerated. The latter route leads to a society where the weakest are preyed upon by the strongest. Argue all you want about that being a description of capitalism, but I think I still prefer a society where there is an attempt at equality and some protections for the weak.

  23. We do seem to love an inquiry. Anyone got a yearly figure on cumulatively how much all these cost?

  24. Does my head in.

I walk into a shop with my husband and I have my little one in a pram.

Followed by security every bloody time its pathetic and makes me livid. Persecuted and judged. Seriously they play peek a boo down every aisle to the point its uncomfortable shopping legitimately.

So even the normal shoppers dont want to shop there.

Do I want my receipt? YES so I can wave it around to security and cameras on my way out.

I get that they cant tell but its having an awful effect on legit shoppers. Rather go online than be accused of something Id never do every bloody time I have a pram. Do I seriously look that much of a desperate tramp.

  25. Watched 2 worthless cunts walk into a Morrisons last night fill bags up with e cigarettes and walk out while the “security” that was hired after sacking the 15 people that worked the tills just stand their doing fuck all

  26. I wonder how much this inquiry, which tells us nothing surprising, cost us?

  27. True, but there are some real social causes to consider.

  28. A friend works in a major supermarket and says they have food theft all the time. The security will give chase or shout but won’t get too close for fear that the thieves have knifes or something. So more times than not, the thieves get away quite easily and the cost of the goods is written off as this is cheaper than dealing with an injured security guard and obviously for the staff and security guard in question, it is much safer.

  29. Oh god Lurpak is going to have security tags on it isn’t it.

  30. Great – so properly resource the Police and Criminal justice system to tackle it then?

  31. What do they expect? Prices have gone through the roof and the ones who are shoplifting haven’t seen any relief. I have no sympathy for these big shops. Maybe they should stop lining exec pockets with millions whilst the ones who actually shop there generally are now struggling. No fucking sympathy at all. Shop lift. If they don’t like it, then do something to fix the cost of living 🤷‍♂️

  32. And to solve the problem, we will raise prices and put the burden on paying customers!

  33. The UK where theft, burglary, drug dealing and assault are all decriminalised.

You know, the basic day to day laws

  34. (Referring more to small local businesses here but) If they won’t enforce the law, protecting businesses, why can’t we enforce our own justice? IE, shoplifter steals, have them return the goods under threat of violence, then send them on their way.

This should give the police the perogative to actually do their jobs of we all band together.

I know the responses are gonna be “oooh we can’t do thay” etc, but if the police won’t protect us we’re going to have to rely on eachother to sort this.

  35. We all know the prisons are full and we need to make an effective punishment for theft so why don’t we go back in time for a public treat.

Bring back the stocks. Public squares with stocks and small time thieves get placed there for a few days and they will soon give up after constant abuse.

  36. Sorry is there an acceptable level of shoplifting? Just do something about it ffs

  37. Heres a novel idea… bring back shop service and have the staff hand the goods to the customers instead of making the customers help themselves.

If the cost of shoplifting really is that high then you can afford extra staff to do this.

The customer pays for it one way or the other so it is time shopowners stopped bleating about this entirely preventable crime.
