Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a firm Donald Trump supporter, on Wednesday became the first EU leader to comment on the US election, posting “on the way to a beautiful victory” on social media.
The nationalist premier enjoys warm relations with his “good friend” Trump, the Republican former president whom he has visited twice this year, often expressing hope that he would return to the US presidency.
“Good morning Hungary! On the way to a beautiful victory,” Orban wrote on Facebook early on Wednesday, accompanied by emojis of Hungarian and US flags.
He did not mention Trump by name, but his post came after the former president was projected to have won two key battleground states, North Carolina and Georgia.
US media have thus far projected that Trump has won in 24 states, giving him 243 electoral votes to 194 for his Democratic opponent Kamala Harris. A candidate needs 270 to win.
