SS: Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed discussing allegations of India targeting Sikh activists in Canada with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his visit to Canberra. India has denied Canada’s claims that its Home Minister ordered actions against Sikh activists. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police previously alleged Indian diplomats shared information about Sikh separatists, leading to targeted violence by organized crime groups. The U.S. also charged an Indian official for plotting to kill a Sikh leader in New York. Jaishankar called Canadian surveillance on Indian diplomats “unacceptable,” while Wong emphasised Australia’s commitment to safety, respect, and judicial independence. Tensions between Canada and India, strained by accusations related to the killing of activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, have resulted in mutual expulsion of diplomats and ongoing disputes over freedom of speech and separatist advocacy.
Sounds like the same routine statements we’ve been hearing for months…
Why? How does this benefit Australia? I’m usually for a very transparent state but raising these allegations before someone is arrested and sentenced seem like it comes with more consequences than benefits
