Solar stocks tank on fears Trump will hamper clean energy progress, repeal IRA

1. Solar stocks sold off Wednesday after [Donald Trump secured a second trip to the White House](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/live-blog/presidential-election-2024-live-updates-rcna175556) and Republicans won control of the Senate.

   Solar stocks are falling on fears that Trump’s second term would spell trouble for the Inflation Reduction Act, which has fueled a clean energy boom in the U.S. through tax credits to expand solar energy.

   NBC News projected that Trump had gained a sizable Electoral College lead to [win the presidency early Wednesday morning](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/trump-wins-election-president-harris-defeat-2024-race-rcna176107).

   The benchmark [Invesco Solar ETF](https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/TAN/) was down more than 12% morning trading, while the [iShares Global Clean Energy ETF](https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/ICLN/) was down nearly 8%.

   Solar panel manufacturer [First Solar](https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/FSLR/) tumbled about about 12%. Residential solar stocks [Sunrun](https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/RUN/) and [Sunnova](https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/NOVA/) fell nearly 25% and 40%, respectively.

   Inverter manufacturers [Enphase](https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/ENPH/) and [SolarEdge](https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/SEDG/) tumbled about 14% and about 17%, respectively. Sun tracker manufacturers [Nextracker](https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/NXT/) and [Array](https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/ARRY/) were down about 10% and 18%, respectively.

   Trump’s campaign platform calls for the termination of the IRA, which he refers to as the “Socialist Green New Deal.” The IRA is one of President Joe Biden’s signature achievements. The law passed on party-line vote in 2022 without any Republican support.

   The future of the IRA, however, will depend not only on whether Trump wins the White House, but whether Republicans also secure unified control of Congress. It remains unclear whether the GOP will secure a majority in the House of Representatives.

2. If the Europeans were less dependent on the US, then we might see the Europeans being able to pressure the US on clean energy. Having higher European tariffs, or even banning, American products that are not environmentally friendly is a good way to ensure the US government does not hamper clean energy progress.

4. A recent study showed the average age of death for coal workers was 57. This is a Republican’s dream. Work people to death and let them die before they can collect Social Security.

   Expect to see some massive coal subsidies.
