Say’s it all, really. The extra cost of the pandemic affected everyone, including those on legacy benefits.
The £20 extra were implemented because a lot of middle class people might otherwise have realized that the welfare system is not fit for purpose. Even so, they found the money utterly inadequate.
Sadly, nobody cares about what the disabled have to say on the subject, as we don’t have a voice that matters.
The Tories have wasted billions during the pandemic and shaken the golden money tree to divert money towards their cronies. There will always be money for wars, for incentives to the rich, tax cuts for corporations e.t.c but when it comes to those at the bottom they are told there is no money.
Made the mistake of having a look at some of the comments on that article.
I’d always maintained that £20 uplift wasn’t really due to help folk during the costs of the pandemic but instead it was there to soften the blow for folk who haven’t been on benefits before as they know they’d likely riot on the ‘correct’ amount.
It’s a shit outcome and just makes me angry more than anything. Happy to wank away literal billions of pounds but fuck people needing less than £100 a month so they can heat their home or get something to eat.
Thérèse Coffey is an absolute witch of a woman.
“because it was aimed at people who suddenly lost their job due to Covid”
If so, why wasn’t the uplift limited to new claimants only?
Answer: because the DWP knew they couldn’t get away with that.
But they did think they could get away with limiting the uplift to their championed Universal Credit only and save some cash by excluding legacy benefit claimants, and they were right – they got away with it.
This is a sad result but it is worth remembering that Legacy benefits pay drastically more than UC. I’m on ESA/PIP/HB and if I was to change to UC/PIP I’d lose roughly £300 a month without any circumstances changed. UC lacks ESA component equivalents for parts like SDP which ensures £60 a week less minimum before any other pay discrepancies between base ESA and UC.
The DWP, the Tories, want to hurt the disabled. The law and rules are written to enable this mistreatment.
