  1. “Jake Wray, 23, admitted violent disorder relating to events in Middlesbrough on 4 August, where he tried to set a car on fire, made racist chants and pushed a flaming wheelie bin into police lines.

He was serving a 24-week suspended sentence for spitting at a police officer and carrying a knife at the time, Teesside Crown Court heard.”

I mean maybe there was a little more to it than just asking if someone was white.

  2. I can’t believe you can go to jail for asking if someone is white (and setting fire to stuff whilst rioting)

  3. >He was serving a 24-week suspended sentence for spitting at a police officer and carrying a knife at the time,

Probably part of the reason he’s been given 3 and a bit years, although he’ll serve less than a year (especially if he’s been on remand since the start of August). Edit, doing the maths, he’ll serve 8 months from now if he’s been on remand since the day of the riot.

  4. It’s a BBC headline. Good chance it will be changed by tomorrow to be less dishonest

  5. Ahh the BBC, the unbiased news organisation leaving crucial information out of the headline to encourage ragebaiting.

  6. I think describing him as a rioter in the headline suggests he wasn’t just asking people what colour their skin was.

  7. >He was serving a 24-week suspended sentence for spitting at a police officer and carrying a knife at the time, Teesside Crown Court heard.

Surely there has to a be a greater punishment for being aggressive when carrying a knife?

  8. Sounds like another one of those lovable rogue, cheeky chappy cunts.

  9. Thats a bit like saying:

    >man arrested for saying, ‘have you got the white’.

Of course afterwards he swaps the ‘white’ for a bag of cash.

  10. People are criticising the headline here and it probably should have highlighted the vandalism & violent disorder Wray perpetrated, but for all its faults the BBC has enough respect for its audience to assume they understand the implications of a guy setting up impromptu checkpoints and demanding to know the race of drivers when they try to pass through.

  11. I feel like he was probably jailed for all the rioting and arson, not the asking whether people were white.

  12. Jailed for “asking if drivers were white”… plus you know, a little bit of arson and attacking police officers…

  13. You can’t even ask drivers if they are white anymore.

  14. There is way more to it than just this he was violent and disorderly. I’m glad our country is taking such a hard line against such people, there is no place for division.

  15. “Wray’s partner and her mother have also been jailed for violent disorder.”

If they ever get married, that’ll be a lovely wedding to attend.

  16. For some reason, that headline reminds me of that popular quote in Ghostbusters.

    >Ray, When Someone Asks If You’re a God, You Say YES.

  17. His question raised the offence to being racially motivated as well as criminal. Which means harsher punishment.

  18. Spit in the face of an officer, see if that bothers ya…

  19. People on reddit keep trying to say there isn’t racism in the UK but there are many people like this who participated in the riots

  20. BBC trying to pander to the Trump-level people you have nowadays.

  21. Is this sub just racism bait now? That title is objectively false, this thread should be deleted
