Tower 42 top section looks like a good place for planning world domination – suitably sinister somehow. But, what purpose do the three ‘holes’ at the top serve? Why aren’t they covered up? How can I use these tonight, when I ‘try to take over the world!’?

  1. The top few floors of the building are “mechanical floors” full of HVAC equipment and other apparatus. Presumably something to do with that.

  2. It’s mainly aesthetic in purpose – the building was designed to resemble the NatWest Bank logo when viewed from above.

The logo consists of three chevrons forming an abstract hexagonal shape, and the building’s structure mirrors this by featuring three segments with gaps / “holes” between them.

  3. The evil villain’s rockets shoot out of those holes for him to escape after he reveals his cunning plan to the hero

  4. Some of the old thunderbirds launched out of here, until the Tracey Island scandal closed it all down.

  5. I’d say the sound of them in heavy weather would be something else. Be a great place to film a ‘tears in the rain’ style sequence.

  6. They’re toilet air vents – the farts need somewhere to escape. Even bankers go to the toilet like the rest of us.

  7. I remember when the Natwest Tower was considered cursed due to the IRA bombing and a fire.

Maybe that’s to let the spirits escape

  8. That’s the negative end.

You connect positive ends to that and if it creates a circuit the light at the top of the Shard signals to the Nazgul to return.

  9. They’re actually massive, but completely non-functional, fans which were recently installed for the filming of Tom Cruise’s latest Mission Impossible film. (No, but seriously, they’re massive fans).

  10. Fight dens, bit like thunder dome. Loser gets chucked off the top of the building like a mortal Kombat fatality.

  11. It’s where the Trident nukes are launched from; as you can see there are three dents which is why the system is named “Trident”

  12. If they buy tower 43 it actually slots over the top and those 3 holes are where the pins from tower 43 slot in to hold it in place.

  13. I am so disappointed with you all. Its obviously an alien landing platform.

  14. Tower 42 is actually an inverted MK1 spacex starship, later versions added additional engines around the 3 central ones shown in this pic

  15. Sometimes I like to stand at the bottom and see if I can throw a bean bag in them

  16. They’re the naughty pits for where they put the whistleblowers and undercover journalists

  17. People who couldn’t pay back their debt were thrown down them

  18. It’s so Tom Cruise can sky dive in and open his chute at the very last moment

  19. Looks like a triple head electric razor, I can’t unsee it now 💀

  20. It’s how the aliens plug in their space ships to recharge. Only the electric ones of course.

  21. That black boxing ring shaped area in the middle looks like it would make an awesome place to enjoy a BBQ in the summer.
