  1. Here’s also a translation from the [focus.de](https://focus.de) ticker, which followed the Bundestag debate (parliament):

“11:25 a.m.: The government would set up a special defense fund of 100 billion euros this year. From now on, it will invest more than 2 percent of GDP in defense. The hall rises again.

11:24 a.m.: Scholz clarifies: “The goal is an efficient, modern Bundeswehr.” […]

11:22 a.m.: “What must be done for peace in Europe will be done,” Scholz says. Scholz then announces that the Bundeswehr must be strengthened. An enthusiastic murmur goes through the hall. “What capabilities does Putin’s army have? What capabilities do we need to counter these threats?

11:20 a.m.: Germany stands by NATO – “without ifs and buts.” It was imperative to prevent Putin’s attack from spreading to other countries. This is one of the reasons why groups have been redeployed – Scholz thanks the soldiers of the Bundeswehr for this.”

  2. Huge for Germany and Europe. Cancelling NS2, SWIFT sanctions, weapon exports, boosting defense spending, more EU military cooperation, etc. Putin has fucked up very badly

  3. The title really undersells how unprecedented this is for post-war Germany and how weird it is to have such a huge support among almost all parties for it. I think even DIE LINKE applauded…

Oh and the speech started with a long standing ovation for the Ukrainian ambassador who was invited as a guest of honor to the parlament.

    (repost from the removed thread)

  4. That is double the yearly military budget of Germany that will be invested on top of the regular budget that will be meeting the 2 % goal starting 2024.

It will also be part of a special fund that will allow to use it quicker and more flexible.

It will likely make Germany the 3rd biggest military spender in the world.

  5. This is historic.

Although some stuff has already been in the works or sounds more impressive than it is. Germany was already considering getting F-35s, at the very least to replace the old Tornado bombers that carry American nukes. Getting Heron drones was pretty much already decided beforehand. And the 2% goal for the defense budget is important but can be fudged with clever accounting.

    Just for some context.

This speech still marks the upending of 40 years of German defense and security policy.

  6. This is huge. For comparison: Germany currently spends 53 Billion Euros per year. This increases the financial power of Germany‘s Military three fold this year

  7. That’s significantly more than Russia’s budget. Putin just created a major military rival at Russia’s doorstep. Speaking of, I think NATO countries should move a lot of troops to Russia’s borders. It seems that Russia’s war isn’t going too well so they’ll either back down or escalate. Having foreign troops near Russia’s borders will make Putin think twice about sending too much reinforcements to Ukraine.

  8. Just to get some relations: 100 billion € is 113 billion $. Current military budget of Germany is 53 billion $. The 2% target demanded by NATO would be ~~76~~ 86 billion $.

  9. I thought I misheard it during Regierungserklärung. This is insanely huge.

It was said as well that Germany is especially eyeing new drones and aerial fighters.

  10. I watched his speach to parliament. And holly fuck… That’s some strong shit. Applause to speach about more money to army about new weapons and so on. Wow… And such long applause to protesters in Russia.

It was a very calm speach but anger could be felt. And it seems Scholz decided to fill Merkels shoes.

I’m from Lithuania and I feel so much better. Love me some Scholz.

  11. To put this into perspective, the Bundeswehr in 2021 was planning to spend €10.34bn on equipment procurement and R&D, with a total budget of €46.93. So this immediate investment isn’t just more than twice the total annual budget, but also around 10 years worth of armament investments in one year. That’s nuts. Decades ago this would have made some neighbors very nervous.

Also worth noting, Scholz pointed out this is all supposed to be spent within Europe and primarily on collaborative projects, in particular with France.

  12. This is a massive deal. Germany has been reluctant to deal in any way other than nicely with Russia since re-unification. Modern Germany is a beautiful, pluralist democracy and it is great to see it finally stepping up to the plate for a free Europe.

Also, what an idiot Putin is – he just brought about every Russian leader since Stalin’s worst nightmare: a remilitarised Germany.

  13. Putin screwed it up so bad. He has welded the West together like it hasn’t for a long time, Ukraine is defending itself heroically, Europe is going to rearm massively, and Russia’s economy is being severely damaged by the sanctions. Hard earned for the madman with his great power fantasies.

Very important and good decision of Scholz.

  14. Historic speech from Scholz. Germany has been for 77 years reluctant to take such action given the actions it did in the past and how such a decision would be viewed by the people both in Germany and abroad.

Well, I think the reception to this so far has been overwhelmingly positive and it’s about damn time that Germany kicks Russia’s ass, both economically (with the announced plans to eliminate Russian energy dependencies) as well as military (hopefully never in direct conflict)

  15. I’ll be damned. I’ve never seen West so united. Absolute 180 from Germany. We don’t want war, but being soft clearly doesn’t work.

  16. Summary:

    – 100 billion expense in 2022 for the german army
    – 2% “or more” of the German GDP for defense
    – Germany will continue to develop new weaponry especially with France
    – Germany will buy HERON fighting drones in Israel
    – commitment to deploy renewable energies fast to reduce dependence on foreign gas
    – 2 new LNG terminals in Germany
    – Germany commits itself to defend “every centimeter of NATO territory “

  17. The EU defence is much more integrated than most readers are aware of.

For example the dutch have integrated their tank force into a german battalion and the germans have integrated most of their naval assets into a dutch carrier group. And with integrated I mean “under one command.”

Recon and transport is also highly integrated at NATO and EU level.
