Let us rapidly join EU, says Ukrainian President Zelenskyy

  1. The acquis ist the acquis is the acquis. The process should be happening as quickly as possible, yes, but the conditions are the conditions are the conditions. They exist for a reason.

  2. Give Ukraine and Moldova the “potential candidate” status like Bosnia Herzegovina

It’s more symbolic but it will give them strength to continue their efforts to remain democracy, free and pro-West

  3. We should be the ones asking him if we may join Ukraine. The Ukrainians are fighting for freedom, resisting dictators. Is there anything more in line with European values right now?

  4. What he actually needs are boots on the ground.
Preferably a UN peacekeeping mission so we don’t all die.

It needs to be addressed what will happen with the two breakaway regions and Crimea.

  5. While I’m 100% in support of EU, Ukraine at its current state is not near being able to be accepted to EU. They will need huge reforms and dramatically change the way things are being done. While that being said, I’m sure the Ukrainians are more than happy to change a lot, as this would be distancing themself from the enemy and joining the free world.

  6. Other than giving Ukraine EU candidate status this is a crazy request. But I’m all for giving more financial and military aid to Ukraine.

  7. Wasn’t Yanukovych kicked out for pulling out of the Association Treaty? I don’t know the status of that as of now but seeing as that basically kicked off this whole situation, it might be worth revisiting it now (hoping that Ukraine stays its own country).

  8. We should help to grow and protect Ukraine, but we SHOULD remember that they have a staggering amount of corruption (worst in Europe and 9th worst in the entire world (which the current hero slash president Zelenskyy vowed to combat however, although he was even stopped or halted temporarily in this by the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. Imagine that. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_in_Ukraine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_in_Ukraine)

However, other new EU-countries such as Poland, Slovakia, Romania, or Bulgaria are only 11 to 24 places behind: [https://ti-ukraine.org/en/news/no-progress-ukraine-s-result-in-the-corruption-perceptions-index-2021/](https://ti-ukraine.org/en/news/no-progress-ukraine-s-result-in-the-corruption-perceptions-index-2021/)

Also, they are the poorest in Europe – so membership will benefit them in economic terms enormously, but be expensive for the western European nations. But that’s what EU was about all along, and see what, for example, Poland has achieved: GDP per capita has grown on average by 6% p.a. over the last 20 years, the most impressive performance in Central Europe. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Poland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Poland)

And yes, Ukraine as a part of Eu will of course also benefit Western Europe, as a market and as a place of production. (but that corruption, though)For example: The danish “Jysk” furniture retailer has 86 shops in Ukraine since opening in 2004, but only 12 in Russia since 2020 despite Ukraine only having 44mio and Russia 144 mio people.

(edit, i forgot a “y” in the hero/president’s name – need to spell people’s names properly. And yes, it is MY opinion that he is a hero)

  9. If Ukraine makes it out to the other side then I think the west needs to take their issues more seriously, and they will only do so with closer integration.

I’m from the UK so Ukraine being an EU member is neither here nor there to me. But I would support them being brought into the nato family, alongside Georgia and Moldova.

  10. That doesn’t seem smart. But Moldova should quickly join NATO and the EU before Russia takes them over too

  11. The news are incomplete. He didn’t ask to become a member overnight, but to be accepted as a candidate and start opening chapters for negotiation, also start accessing pre-aderation funds

  12. Thank guck even reactionary reddit isn‘t reactionary enough to be in favour of this request.
Ukraine isn‘t anywhere close to joining the EU, though we‘d gladly accept them as candidate and eventual member, if they meet the conditions.

  13. I think at this point we can all agree that Ukraine is special. I imagine most people on this sub are pro-EU, but how many of us would actually fight against overwhelming odds for a chance at EU membership? And yes, I know that’s not the only reason why they keep fighting, but it’s a big part of it. If ever there was a country that deserved EU membership, it’s Ukraine.

That being said, the first order of business now is ending the war. EU integration process can be started alongside rebuilding. This war has garnered Ukraine more sympathy from all over the world than perhaps anything I’ve ever witnessed. I dare say the EU and the world can help them rebuild and make their country better than ever.

  14. Except there is a reason Ukraine is not in the EU for the same part that Switzerland is not in the EU – except on the other end of that logic.EU countries would see people migrating from the poorest parts to the richest parts as if it were the law of second thermodynamics. Guess on which end the Ukraine is. It is easy to ignore history when emotions are running high.

Heck I personally have no problem with the Ukraine. I’d love to see them here and pay for their EU budget deficit. But as we have seen in Brexit, it is not just up to the younger people and their opinion expressed as a vote. Also I don’t want to make this into a age thing, as it really is not. It is mostly an education issue that lets one see the long term clearer and be more inclined for something that takes a lot of believe and foresight….like climate change.

Ukriane conflict, geopolitics – booring but better than anything else I’ve found, unless you read wikipedia and other non-media sources.

  15. Whoever’s Putin adviser needs to get fired. With everything that he’s doing, he’s just bringing the rest of the world together, especially Europe, pushing countries into NATO and the EU lol
