> “Being there a long time, you watch people come and go,” Thompson, who’s been on the sketch show since 2003, said on a recent episode of the Thanks Dad With Ego Nwodim podcast hosted by his SNL costar. “So you have to, like, deal with the parting of friendships, that kind of thing. The mourning of the loss of certain people’s presence and all that. So there’s a lot of bittersweet to it.”
> He explained that it wasn’t just show exits that made it hard to say goodbye. “We’ve had crew members die. All kinds of s—,” said Thompson. “So, like, it’s a heavier thing than just like ‘s— is sweet for me ’cause I’ve been there a long time’ kind of thing.”
It’s wild that Lorne has been there for 50 years.
I just realized he’s kind of like the LeBron of SNL in regards to longevity. They started the same year.
He’s been an institution and an anchor on that show. I lost interest in the show but when I caught occasional moments I’ve always loved seeing him
I wonder if seeing any of his co stars run off and become mega famous has ever tempted him to try the same. Snl will never be a bad gig but they’ve produced some huge names over the last 20 years
At some point people need to leave SNL – honestly it’s a stepping stone to something better or hone their skills with something different. It’s part boot camp for upcommers, part marathon for BTS and a large circus for everyone. The first cast members became huge names and every year season it’s attempting to capture the lightening in the same bottle and that’s exhausting for some people like Samburg. That’s my two cents.
Its like that Regular Show meme of the immortal guy.
Honestly it’s probably a great gig for him. Since he’s been there so long he’s probably not working insane hours and is making $2-3 million a year. I would imagine he just genuinely loves doing sketch comedy because he’s pretty much done it his whole career.
