Fairplay to him. Wearing a poppy isn’t political, but not wearing one is political.
Good statement. More Irish players should follow his lead and stop commemorating the crimes of Britain in Ireland.
Statements like this are a waste of time because the perennially offended geeza’s haven’t the level of intelligence to take some time to read it and consider this viewpoint.
Least only man set of balls on him not to wear it
He’s a clown 🤡
James McClean, a great bunch of lads
Respect
Brilliant response.
Not aggressive or bitter, makes his point well, educated people a little bit also as many still probably don’t know why. Glad the Wrexham documentary gave him a few minutes to explain as well.
British media can attack him all they want the majority and history is on his side
He gets 10/10 just for bringing out bend the knee
Why are some British people obsessed with Irish people not wearing the poppy? They don’t seem to bother other nationalities when they don’t wear one, Why Irish?
There’s nothing like the preciseness of the autistic mind!

Hear hear
As a random brit viewing this I have no problem with anyone not wearing a poppy. I would point out that people in the UK are not forced to wear a poppy – except maybe BBC TV presenters. Walk down a random street and most people will not be wearing a poppy.
I wear one. For me it represents the horrendous loss of human life of all soldiers who have died fighting in wars – not just British soldiers. I certainly do not view it as some form of support for all British military actions (too many of which have been shameful). I hope that one day humans will learn to live together in peace and harmony.
What about all the Irish men who willing volunteered in both WWI and WWII?
Do they not deserve to be remembered for their sacrifice.
Are you aware what the Nazis had planned for Ireland had they’d won?
Seen the headline on sky news yesterday..every year he’s played in England they run the story, every year he comes out with the same statement, all it does it put him in danger imo non story that’s going on too long
This is getting tedious, every year they seek him out hoping he’ll say something that they can twist into a headline that will stir up the bigoted royalists
He is very clear on not forcing his beliefs upon others – unfortunately something many people can’t grasp, whether it be sports, politics or something else entirely. Difficult to argue his point when it’s so well articulated. Fair play!
Ridiculous that this is a thing every year. He’s explained himself well so many times. At this point anyone who still doesn’t understand are just trying not to.
What an absolute legend. Showing many people that it’s easy to have your principles, but you also need the courage to live them. A great many fold in his position, and drop their principles to avoid the awkward questions. I have great admiration for James because he refuses to do that, and shows everyone that if he can do it, we can do it too.
Just to play devils advocate here, what happened on Bloody Sunday was an atrocity and should never have happened. But I believe it would have been much, much bloodier had the Nazis won.
Yawn.

Why is this still a thing ffs?
Legend 👏👏
Saw someone claim he was an Anglophobe yesterday, to that redditor – go read a book you fucking cretin.
He’s wrong in saying that from the start the poppy was just for WW1 and WW2. That’s just a lie Brits tell to whitewash their history. From the start, in the 1920s, it was for all British soldiers, including those that had served in Ireland in the army/Auxiliaries/Black&Tans.
On the basis that it covers British forces in all conflicts, obviously many many people take exception and not just Ireland.
My granddads from Tralee but I grew up in the one of the keys places British soldiers were deployed for Iraq and Afghanistan. There’s a lot of gammons here who try to make the poppy a much bigger thing than it is.
Most British service people don’t care if someone wears the poppy or not, and the only people who do are the dads army cosplayers who would rather give £1 in November than actually vote in governments who’d look after veterans. Good on James for this dignified post, there needs to be so much more education here on the troubles and how colonialism caused the situation.
Jesus, he is like a broken record. Ever heard of saying “no comment” James?.
If people want to find out why you aren’t wearing the poppy all they have to do is read your statement in 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020,2019…..
Its the only thing keeping him relevant and he knows it. Bloody Sunday happened up in Derry around 18 years before he was born too. You’d swear he was there himself the way he goes on about it.
If you hate England so much why have you spent your entire adult life there, getting paid in notes with the Queens face on them and sent your 4 kids to English schools?

Articulate and well-argued. Well done to him.

And in Ireland the poppy has always been seen as a sign of British imperialism: https://comeheretome.com/2015/11/04/poppy-snatching-in-dublin/

Every year, why do we even humour this bullshit
Why does anyone care? It’s 2024 lads.
