Damn this is really sad. By all accounts the guy was a keen diver and loved the ocean.
I really hope they don’t start culling loads of sharks because of this.
“Bloody Poms coming here and monopolising everything!”
I’ve seen the video and it’s absolutely grim. The poor man’s lifeless torso is floating and the shark comes back for another chew! With that being said, why do people continue to risk their lives by swimming in open oceans that are inhabited by sharks? Utter madness.
Serious question: what is the difference between ex-pat and an immigrant?
>Claire Marie, who withheld her full name, said that when she visited the beach on Wednesday, the sea was as “white as a meringue”, and chopping and churning with a large school of fish that had attracted seagulls and rock fishers.
>
>“I thought, ‘Uh oh, it looks sharky and messy,’” she said, adding that she decided to keep to the shallows close to shore.

Aussies tend to stay out of the water when it’s choppy and gulls/fishers are catching lots of fish close to the shore. Locals tend to have a sense of when the water is sharky or more likely to be dangerous than normal. Same with rips. Being aware of when conditions are bad and getting out and waiting for the next good day is a key skill. Deaths in the ocean in Aus are disproportionately people who didn’t grow up around dangerous water, animals or swimming.
State of this sub! On a post about a guy being killed by a fucking shark we have:
A debate about ex-pat vs immigrant and how ex-pat is a “white man” term
“I hope the shark is going to be ok”
We keep killing the reefs and overfishing the oceans, yet act surprised when the sea dwelling predators eat whatever food they can find.
It’s australia i wouldn’t go near the water let alone in it unless it’s an indoor swimming pool. I would feel sorry but he knew the risks and knew this could happen.
>”Detectives from the Marine Area Command are appealing for information as they continue to investigate a fatal shark attack at Little Bay yesterday.
*Described as grey and white and fishy looking according to locals familiar with the area. Do not approach suspect is armed and dangerous.*
He looked like such a kind man. It was an extremely gruesome way to die. The video is pretty horrific.
I love sharks. I’ve studied them as a hobby for years. I have 2 sharks in Pisces shape as a tattoo. They go back to the times of the dinosaur. A lot of sharks out there are tagged and identified especially in Sydney. I respect the environment and the ocean. If I’m in a known sharky part of the world and it killed me I’d say fair play I’m in the sharks world and they pre-date humans so it is their world too and it was first however this shark didn’t test bite as someone else commented and if it’s a rogue shark it needs tagging, identifying and moving to a sanctuary or aquarium of sorts, better than killing it. I don’t know all the facts but my guess is a great white that’s just left Juvenile-hood and is a young adult. Pregnant female adult could also be, mistook the guy for a seal
I’m confused, is it the first time someone has been killed in Australia in 59 years by a shark or the 2nd time in a year?
He wasn’t swimming near the shore, this was near the rocks but in deep water and near people fishing. If you do that you’re taking a massive risk. RIP to this young man
I hope its not hunted down and killed for the crime of been a fucking shark. Its sad he lost his life but the shark is not to blame.
Basically, the Brits need to learn ‘don’t go swimming near fucking sharks, you cunts’.
I’m not a love ocean swimming guy, but I have to ocean swim for triathlon races occasionally.
Personally I would not feel safe swimming in the water I saw on the video. Very busy, churning, swells, rocks, fishermen.
But I get it. He was always in the ocean and a diving instructor. For him swimming in those conditions was like a jog around the block.
I don’t believe for one minute large sharks are innocent misunderstood puppy dogs like they are portrayed.
People are often pulled from the water or rescued before the shark comes back for its second hit.
This happened in California in 2008. Had he not been swimming with a triathlon group no doubt the shark would have returned a few minutes later.
