  1. Stefanik has been a staunch defender of Israel in its response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks as well as an [outspoken over the last year about antisemitism on college campuses](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/rep-elise-stefanik-university-pennsylvania-presidents-resignation-one-rcna128939). A day before last week’s election, Stefanik reiterated her call for the defunding of the [United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/israel-unwra-ban-devastating-palestinians-rcna177766) because she alleges it has been infiltrated by Hamas.

Stefanik has served as the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference since May 2021, after then-Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., was ousted from from the role over her vocal criticism of Trump.

  2. Did someone else win her seat or is this another pick up for democrats? The governor is obviously going to appoint a democrat.

  3. In a purely geopolitical sense, I think the US should absolutely support their allies over the globe, and being generally supportive of Israel and not compelling them into unwanted ceasefires is correct in the pure self interest of the US. However, I also do think that the US should similarly use Ukraine as an incredible opportunity to weaken one of their greatest adversaries and going isolationist there is a huge mistake.

  4. At least it gets her out of a legislative role and opens the seat to a dem pickup. Slim chance of that, but better than no chance.

  5. This is great news – Dems will fight to win the special election for her seat.

  6. I did not have reducing the republican house majority via appointment on my “jesus christ we’re doing this again?” bingo card
