When my grandma was still alive, I remember her showing me the photos of when she had to go to Rome, as a young woman with all her family, and welcome back home the corpse of her fallen brother, who died fighting for Mussolini in the Albanian campaign. He had no choice but to go, and lost his life for a war that served no purpose and we were never going to win, for a cause neither him nor his family ever supported.
It was painful for my grandma to remember those moments, she was always getting so sad, and angry, but she always took the time to tell me his story, every year, so he wouldn’t be forgotten.
My great uncle died fighting a war that wasn’t his, he didn’t get the chance to fight for our freedom, he was taken away from his family way too soon. But he was a brave man and although I never had the honour to meet him, I’ll never forget him and I’ll always be grateful to my grandma for sharing his story with me.
My grandad (British) was a prisoner of war in Italy, he turned 21 years old while he was there and the Italian guards beat him up for his birthday treat.
My eyes still grow damp to see that His Majesty signed it with his own rubber stamp
