EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A local downtown El Paso business gearing up for the holiday season suffered a setback due to an overnight fire.
According to the El Paso Fire Department, they received a call regarding a fire in the alley near 511 S Stanton Street in downtown at around 8 p.m. on Sunday.
The co-owner Jenny Chong stated she was not called about the fire and found her storage shed burned to the ground when she opened the store Monday morning.
According to Chong, the store was preparing for the holiday season, she added everything is now a total loss.
“You cannot sell this one because it smells of smoke and also they spray water, it’s [also] so everything’s wet and smells of smoke you cannot sell,” said Chong.
Chong stated, she was in the process of getting a new insurance company to protect the merchandise, but at the time of the fire, she did not have any coverage.
The El Paso Fire Department cut the power lines in the store according to Chong.
She added this was done to prevent the fire from spreading.
The store “Grace Trading” opened Monday without any electricity, Chong said El Paso Electric is not able to connect its power again until they demolish what is left of the storage shed.
Chong said the crews with El Paso Electric informed her this was because the shed could not be built up to code.
According to Chong she now has to hire a new electrician and someone to tear down the shed.
El Paso Electric gave the following information about the fire:
The residential or business owner is responsible for any electrical work done within their structure(s), which should always be done by a licensed and insured electrician. They are also responsible for obtaining any necessary permits and arranging required inspections from the appropriate parties, such as City of El Paso or Dona Ana County and, in some cases, El Paso Electric. EPE will inspect any new connections from our transformers to the customer’s meter as needed for electrical upgrades and safety concerns. Beyond this, it remains the owner’s responsibility.
The El Paso Fire Department told KFOX14/CBS4 the fire is under investigation.
