>The reactions after the accident in which Janice, Janick and Maïthé died were not pleasant. There is great public outrage, many people are angry and are calling for stricter penalties, more alcohol checks and alcohol interlocks. It is incomprehensible to many that the driver could still get behind the wheel (drunk) after 14 convictions.
>A few weeks after the accident, the anger and indignation subsided. Also in the various Facebook and WhatsApp groups where alcohol checks are announced. Members warn each other about checks every day. Not to ensure that drivers do not drink, but to warn them to take a different route home.
>Every region in our country has such a group, each with tens of thousands of members. The public outrage seems to have subsided quickly.
>Police judge Geert Vandaele speaks of a culture problem. “Many drivers think: ‘It won’t happen to us, we will get home’, as Flemish we think we will solve it.”
Womp womp
Anyone else remember the ‘Vallende sterren’ on the radio?
Announce on 1 place while setting up on a different route. See positive rates skyrocket
Maybe I have used such groups to send people through a street which I knew had a similar control going on during New Year’s Eve… just maybe
I´m sad to see alcohol to be so in the picture in Flanders, it´s culture ok, but it´s also the cause of a lot of problems. You have to know when to enjoy this Flemish culture, whilst staying as far away as possible of endangering others.
This is a problem of all ages, even though we receive bad traffic news surrounding deaths involving aclohol almost every week on national news
Some of these groups are for road blocks and accidents (to alert people about local accidents/ blockage of roads, hence the reason i´m in one with strict policy). But yes, it´s counter productive to see people report an alcohol check, the point of these is to minimize traffic deaths.
Don’t forget Waze and Telegram.
That’s because some people are just horrible people with no redeeming qualities.
I don’t ever drink and drive but I would take another route dont like to lose time or deal with cops tbh
I guess you haven’t heard of the many telegram and WhatsApp groups? This is nothing.
Friend of mine is in a WhatsApp of 60k People.
Went to my local carrefour this weekend and there was a small fridge, with jupiler publicity on it and only cooled jupiler cans in it, in front of every checkout. As long as things like that are widely accepted, alcohol will be a problem in our society
Oh that’s why *sometimes* there’s an absurd amount of cars on the side road I take!
Well that’s an extra reason to be weary, but I can’t possibly imagine they *all* drink and drive? That’s too many.
hey goeiemorgen
They closed so many lanes in Brussels, even during the night there are huge traffic jams. These groups serve more to avoid traffic and to be able to drive back home in 10 minutes as it should be at late hours instead of getting stuck 1h on the road, as if rush hour wasn’t enough.
Even if traffic jams during rush hour still make the trip faster than public transportation in most of the cases.
I would def take a different route – directly into the check. So many years of driving and not a single chance of getting a bob.
