    Edit.
As long as Romania has that immense poverty and is basically run on a form of open corruption, opening Romania to Schengen is a really bad idea.

  2. European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson said on Monday, during an official visit to Romania, that it is time for Romania to be a full member of the Schengen area.

“It simply came to our notice then. As you know, in the last ten years, the Commission has assessed that Romania is ready for Schengen. And this is our position, ” she said.

Bode accompanied the Brussels official on a visit to the Siret Border Crossing Point. Johansson also visited the mobile refugee camp set up at the local stadium, writes Agerpres.

The Minister of Internal Affairs said that Romania is ready for any scenario and fully involved “in providing a coordinated and articulated response” to the situation created after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“Romania remains firmly committed to the joint effort to protect peace and security in the region and to provide humanitarian support to the Ukrainian nation,” said Lucian Bode.

“We are trying to persuade the Council to move forward, because it is time for Romania to be a full member of Schengen ,” Johansson told a joint news conference with Interior Minister Lucian Bode.

    **Ylva Johansson said on Twitter:**

“The weather is pretty cold here in Siret, Romania 🇷🇴 but the Romanian welcome for people fleeing from war in Ukraine is very warm.”

Given that Romania met the conditions to be a member back in 2011:

    > whereas the completion of the Schengen evaluation process for Bulgaria and Romania and the state of preparedness of the two countries to implement all the provisions of the Schengen acquis were confirmed by SCH-EVAL experts, and by the Council in its conclusions of 9 and 10 June 2011; whereas in its draft decision of 8 July 2011, the Council verified that the necessary conditions for the application of the Schengen acquis had been met in all areas, namely data protection, air borders, land borders, police cooperation, the Schengen Information System, sea borders and visas; whereas in addition to the challenge of managing external borders of the European Union

…it might be more-accurate to say that it is over a decade past time for Romania to be a full member of Schengen.
