HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – As temperatures drop outside, folks start cranking up their thermostat inside.
“Well, as you know, we’re approaching the winter, and people will have higher electric bills, higher gas bill,” said Freddie Triplett from Spire Energy. “Why? Because they’re using more. And so, in order to combat that is to be able to be energy efficient.”
Spire Energy partnered with Edwards Street Fellowship Center to hand out 100 energy efficiency kits on Tuesday.
These ‘weatherization kits’ include low-flow aerators for bathroom and kitchen sinks, a shower head, weather stripping and a pipe cover.
“You want to be as efficient as you are so that you manage those costs in your household in the right way,” said Triplett. “And so, this is just another way.”
Spire also helped the food pantry pack up bags going to families getting their monthly bag of food. Triplett says they hoped to spread the word about another way people can save money this winter.
“This is just an opportunity for us to not only volunteer in between cars that come by and we fulfill their needs, from a food pantry standpoint and then from Spire and our energy efficiency program,” said Triplett.
In Mississippi, there are rebate programs offering money back to people who switch to more efficient appliances.
“In the state of Mississippi, we have energy efficiency rebates for particular gas appliances,” said Triplett. “That would be your tankless water heaters, it would be your furnace, and we also have it for your thermostats that you have in your homes. It’s not only about gas, but it’s an overall energy efficiency that we try to promote.”
