  1. Since the end of October, 12 bodies have been found floating in the sea or washed up on northern beaches in Calais, including three this week.

In France, they are being linked to a Channel small boat tragedy in which three migrants are officially confirmed to have died.

Survivors of the crossing and charities supporting migrants in Calais are concerned that the incident on 23 October may have claimed the lives of many others.

They believe as many as 16 people are still missing. It would make the doomed crossing the most deadly this year, and the second deadliest ever.

Three people died and 45 were rescued after an overloaded boat capsized, according to French maritime authorities. Two were confirmed dead in Calais with a passenger ferry recovering a third body.

Utopia 56, a charity which supports migrants along the French coast, believes the bodies that have come ashore this month are likely to have been onboard the boat that sank that night in October, while others may be linked to another fatal crossing a week later.

The group said it and other organisations in France, including the Red Cross, are in touch with friends and relatives of 16 people reported missing following the sinking on 23 October.

But there has been no official confirmation from French authorities of how many people are missing, or whether the recovered bodies are of people who were onboard.

Angele Vettorello, co-ordinator at Utopia 56, said while it was common for migrants to report friends or relatives missing, it was unprecedented for so many to be unaccounted for.

She told i: “As an organisation, we think at least 16 people have died after the three that have been recovered.

“It’s part of the reality here that at the border that a lot of people are missing, and there is no investigation to find them, to find the body.”

  2. If we just turn them back…. Then what? Why is it our responsibility that these people die trying to cross?

  3. Chances are there have been much bigger tradegies that we will never know about because the crossing hasn’t been spotted and no one bar the smugglers know about it.

  4. If I jumped in a rubber dinghy to cross from Wales to Ireland and drowned would people feel sorry for me? No, they would say I was an idiot on a suicide mission.

  5. What do we want from this?

    1. People to stop drowning
    2. Behead the people smuggling gangs and their income stream

Solution: put on a free ferry. They’re coming anyway. Land them here and into an asylum center. Those refused are put back on the ferry and returned.

Then intentionally seek out and sink the dhingys.

  6. If only the French would prevent this from happening…

  7. Sadly my sympathy is running low for this; to cross from a continent of perfectly safe & welcoming countries in Europe, across the worlds busiest shipping lane with some rather inclement weather on purely economic grounds is stupid

  8. Channel tunnel or by air would be my first choice if I had to get to the UK

  9. This is the problem with hotels. It also encourages people to risk their lives. Build a damned camp for crying out loud. Fewer will take big risks to come.

  10. The french government needs to sort the shit out

  11. Not Britain’s fault. Stop the boats and we reduce to needless loss of life. Carry on allowing this behaviour and more illegals will die.

Britain has voted and made its choice. It’s time for our government to stop the boats, stop illegal migration, and stop excess death.

Ultimately, the migrants paying £1,000s to get a half-spot of one of these inflatables are suffering the consequences of their own actions. More at the bottom of the sea is their choice, and theirs alone.

  12. I just don’t understand why people would chose the UK you’ve passed through some of the most beautiful countries on the planet and you chose the UK I personally would chose northern Italy somewhere but that’s just me

  13. F**k me, when will leaders wake up and stop this trafficking. If they wanted to stop it, they would have already. Talk is just a way to indecision and more deaths.

  14. Why go where millions of other destitute people are going? Why not go somewhere else where you’ll be the only migrant? (Exaggerated to get my point across).

  15. We need to get a grip on this. The government like to pretend it isn’t an issue. But the problem is that if you pretend a problem isn’t there.
Unfortunately it still is wether you like it or not. One day we will have to face it like it or not.

  16. 12 less people the UK will not have to support with free shit at the expense of hardworking taxpayers.

  17. They clearly have in their heads that the UK is so much better than France, Belgium and the Netherlands that its worth risking their lives and in some cases the lives of their children.

A simple analysis of why this is followed by a removal of any of these incentives would surely be a start?

  18. Send them back to France dead or alive. Sick of this shit

  19. Such bravery, worth to the risk to escape such a torturous and brutal war infested country of *checks notes* France…
