  1. I am not particularly religious, but during my deployments with the U.S. military in Afghanistan, l spent part of a couple deployments out of a remote combat outpost (COP) in the mountains , located in Nangarhar Province’s Achin District.

This COP was a couple of valleys over from where they dropped the MOAB, a place we knew well . Like many of the high mountain regions there ,the rocky mountain tops would drop straight down into fertile green river valleys, where all the topsoil & dead foliage would be deposited after the snows had melted on the high mountain tops .

One of the guys while on patrol in one of those river valleys ,had found an approx 1ft long piece of ancient fossilized timber, that had come down from the mountain tops ,it had been tumbled for that long in the river sand that it had a mirror polish & they at first thought they had found part of a buried rocket it was so shiny & solid .

He was that taken with his find he had then lugged it back to the COP. By chance, it fitted nearly perfectly into a shot out murder hole in the wall of the COP, from its previous use as a ISIS–K training camp .

Combat has a way of turning even the most skeptical into superstitious believers ,so it came that when we were to patrol into known jihadist strongholds, as well as your “lucky” red underwear or socks etc,we would all knock on that fossilized lump of wood for good luck, before we stepped out the patrol gate .

In between deployments one year l noticed someone with great care had nearly perfectly sign written above it a verse from the bible that always stuck with me,that seems fitting –

    Isaiah 6:8

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

It is hard for those who have not faced death in combat to understand ,but it is nothing like a Hollywood version ,you could not give a flying fuck over what political gas bag was leading your country ,or what some shiny ass General had ordered . In battle your only concern is for what we Americans call our ‘Battle Buddies’,the guys fighting either side of you,who you knew would lay down their life for yours & you the same .

As hard as it is ,these two are among the rare love pairing over the worlds’ history, who have laid their lives down together with the one they love in combat. Their love was to be a bright, blinding flash of light in the darkness, rather than a low flickering glow, to be snuffed out by mediocrity .

    RIP

    Slava Ukraini, Heroyam Slava!

  2. This tears my heart up. Fuck you Putin to hell.
