Starting March first, smartphone use while driving (which I use for gps purposes) is only allowed with a “daartoe bestemde houder aan het voertuig”. I’m having trouble finding out whether a those silicone sticky pads qualify, does anyone know?

  1. As I understand it, it can’t be thrown loose, like on your laps etc, where car movement can cause the phone to flip/move which then take your attention out of the road for too long to “fix it”.

So by me, anything that fix your phone in place preventing it to move by itself is good.

  2. Ive got one of those that click in the vent system. Just don’t start tapping it while ur on the road. Ask the copilot or pull to the side. But i doubt they pull you over for one tap.

  3. I have it linked to my car with a usb so it’s just sitting there with a black screen out of view while I can manage the gps where the radio is

  4. Hmm, what about the spaces made for charging the phone wirelessly in new cars? I hope that falls under a dedicated holder.

  5. > In de nieuwe wet zal het gebruik van zo’n toestel met scherm, al ligt het op de passagierszetel, in de middenconsole of op de schoot van de bestuurder altijd strafbaar zijn. Alleen als de auto stilstaat of geparkeerd staat mag de smartphone volgens de nieuwe regels gebruikt worden. Dat betekent echter niet dat het gebruik ervan toegestaan is wanneer je wacht voor de verkeerslichten, want dat wordt niet verstaan onder de definitie van “stilstaan”.

Looks like I am screwed… when I get in my car I drop it to passenger seat as my console is full.

  6. What about those stupid new car entertainment systems where everything is touch-screen and you need to go trough 3 menus just to change the radio…

  7. Thanks for the input everyone. I’m thinking if the term “daartoe bestemde houder” isn’t actually further defined anywhere, it’s a bit up to interpretation and a law enforcer could potentially give you a hard time over it. However, it’s definitely not something that’s going to be actually noticeable from outside the vehicle, so I’m going to take my chances.
