Cyndi Lauper: ‘I had a hard time when I was famous because when I first hit everybody, they took everything I was wearing — the color, the style, you name it — and they spit it out and said we’re onto the next’

  1. she had such a large impact on fashion at the time, as well as being a key figure in the popularization of wrestling in the 80’s

It’s a shame that Cyndi got thrown into the “just like everyone else” pile when she really was a trendsetter. It’s also a shame the WWE hasn’t inducted her into the HOF when Mr. T and Drew Carey have a spot

  2. I went to one of her shows about 5 years ago and she is crazy talented. In the 90’s I thought she was just a MTV wannabe that had looks but no talent but wow she has a voice and can play dulcimer with the best of them.

  3. She literally changed the course of fashion, film,  and popular music culture so dramatically that it is still felt today.

  4. Everyone should take the time to watch the amazing film Vibes.

A truly scrumtrulescent turn on the silver screen

  5. Cyndi lauper is in a unique class of cultural giants. She changed fashion and culture around her image so quickly and decisively that she was soon seen as a cliched version of what she’d created.

She was a true original and tbh the craziest thing was that she was able to make the impact she did while being so original.

  6. Saw her show in Austin last night and it was fantastic.

  7. It has to be so hard being a celebrity. All that money and fame. So heartbreaking.

  8. When you make a “flash in the pan” fashion you permanent style…

  9. Cyndi was a late entry in the sense that she was already 30 when her debut album came out, and by the late 80’s was pretty much tossed aside sadly. She was treated as a “flavor of the decade” kind of star, but she’s absolutely right that her style and energy is what made her so popular. When someone thinks of the bright vibrant look of the 80’s, you think of her.

Madonna on the other hand amongst female artists was 5 years Cyndi’s junior, released her debut album the same year (1983), and put out more work that decade than Cyndi. The music industry clasped onto her with an iron fist, marketed the hell out of her, and she catapulted into super stardom that carried her success into the 90’s and beyond.

  10. She was in a band called Blue Angel that was fantastic and highly recommended

  11. Seen her last night in Austin. She still got it!! What an awesome show. Her voice is just as powerful as it ever was. Along with her storytelling, she had this “wind-ribbon” art piece going on in the middle of the crowd. So beautiful.
