  1. The strap can get caught in the play buildings/toys, leading to strangulation

Wrong. It says “don’t hang yourself”. When the helmet gets stuck you may strangle yourself unintentionally.

  3. It’s actually for safety.
The play equipment in playgrounds is designed for children’s head size. This means that the distances between individual parts of the device are such that a child’s head does not get caught in them in an emergency. But if the children wear a helmet, they may strangle themselves.

  4. Children’s play parks in Germany are very specifically designed to be safe without any equipment, according to very, very high standards, and are inspected by the TÜV to meet those standards. Helmets result in two things:

    * A risk of the helmet getting stuck in the play equipment, causing harm to the child. This is the obvious one.
    * But also, safety equipment causes the child or parent not to recognise the (calculated) risks that do exist in the park, and could cause them to e.g. climb higher or on more difficult play equipment than the child or parent would consider a safe risk boundary for them at their age. Without safety equipment, both children and their parents are usually much more aware of these risks, it has been found.

  5. To add to the danger of strangulation: The height of the structures designed for climbing, combined with the material of the ground (often coarse sand or small-grain gravel, sometimes something rubbery similar to a gym floor or racetrack), make *serious* injuries from falling very unlikely. Kids might get a few scratches and/or bruises, but not fracture their skull or get a concussion. So not only is a helmet dangerous, it is also not particularly helpful in its intended function.

Often, the helmet ban is accompanied by a ban of [necklaces](https://www.vonelternempfohlen.de/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/20200611_192055-scaled.jpg) or [lanyards](https://www.deinschilderdruck.de/media/image/bb/bc/72/SP-02-C-04-R-Kinderspielplatz-mit-Wippe-8-Piktogramme-rot.png), which can get caught in similar ways.

  6. Helmet is for falling on the ground, if you are using the playground it can get stuck or caught in something, resulting in strangulation

  7. Because germans are fans of Darwins natural selection

  8. Wait. Why is it closed for children above 14? I mean its likely that older children would not play on playgrounds but I feel like that is abit weird?

  9. Always people posting this stuff coz they don’t read properly.
