QUINCY (WGEM) – Quincy University Professor Wendell Mauter lectured about the importance of animals during World War II on Saturday.
World War II is known for many things, but everyday pets is not one of them. That’s why longtime Quincy University professor Wendell Mauter decided to show Quincy residents about their importance.
“Nobody thinks about them, but there were probably more animals used in World War II than any other war in human history,” Mauter explained.
There were about a dozen guests, two of them being dogs, at the event. Professor Mauter explained how animals served a number of purposes for both sides during the war. He gave an example of how United States citizens donated nearly 20,000 dogs to the military during the war.
Mauter partnered with the Quincy Humane Society for the event because he believes that animals serve a number of roles in people’s lives.
“All our dogs are rescue dogs from the humane society so I wanted to give back a little bit to what they’ve done for us because adopting a pet it just changes your life,” Mauter added.
The Quincy Humane Society hopes to hold these types of events in the future and turn them into fundraisers for their animal shelter.
