Very Good. This was not only wrong because it is painful for the animals but because companies had to pay religious members from these group to offert they products to all.
Okay, so as many of us know, the [European Union has animal slaughter regulations](https://ec.europa.eu/food/animals/animal-welfare/animal-welfare-practice/slaughter-stunning_en). Exemptions are made for kosher and halal at the European level. The European Court of Justice has ruled that member-states and regions have wide discretion on legislating kosher/halal methods, referred to as “ritual slaughter” and can ban it locally, and Sweden, Luxembourg, Denmark, Wallonia, and Flanders have already done so. Greece had an exemption for halal and kosher, but this recent court ruling nixes that exemption, making Greece the next member-state to ban ritual slaughter.
The court, however, simply ruled that the stunning requirement doesn’t need to interfere with ritual slaughter, and there must be a way for ritual slaughter to comply with regulation. That was their reasoning for scrapping the exemption. Indeed, this already takes place in Sweden and Luxembourg, where ritual slaughter -if it takes place- must take place after stunning. In the Netherlands, the requirement is that the animal must be stunned if it doesn’t lose consciousness in 40 seconds.
There must not be exception rules for people who have some sort of special opinion (aka belief).
Good, now let’s ban all slaughter 😎😎
They haven’t actually banned ritual slaughter, they’ve just imposed rules which requires stunning of the animals before the slaughter.
You’re still killing animals. It’s ridiculous to think there is a “humane” way to do it.
While that’s a good thing, there should also be stricter laws that would improve animals lives. Most of the suffering takes place at the farms.

Good. Meat isn’t made holy or unholy by the method in which it was processed. This is a tradtition for tradtions sake, and does not bring any advantages
Shitty click bait title.
The new regulations simply require the animal to be stunned then you can do all the rituals you want. Been like that here in Australia for ages, and a lot of meat produced here is halal because we export to the Middle East afaik.
Experimenting on Chimps to save human lives and develop antivirals and vaccines: BAD
Slaughtering animals brutally like it’s Anno 100: Muh religious freedoms.
gg legislators, gg!
Animal welfare should come before traditions or rituals. Sometimes, rituals can be imposed over existing animal welfare (legal) frameworks. You can’t even cite how animals die in the wild, if you participate in agriculture, you slaughter your livestock on the standards of your local society.
This kinda overlooks that the regular method for butchering animals, at least here in the Netherlands, is performed by choking animals with carbon dioxide.
Unfortunately CO2 induces intens panic as it triggers the bodys respiratory alarm system. It can take the animal up to a minute to die while it is in intens panic. It’s done at laboratories as well with mice, a reason I avoided certain experiments when I was a scientist.
Religious butchering is done by cutting the throat, also painfull and it can also lead to a minute in pain before unconsciousness.
But I honestly can’t say it’s worse than gassing animals with CO2.
‘Animal welfare’ activists: “We care about the feelings of animals and don’t want them to be in pain or distress”
Also animal welfare activists: “We must conserve the natural population of various wildlife species where they get hunted, mauled and chewed to death, their offspring devoured, etc, while criticizing humans who take them as pets or penning too many of them in zoos”
Misleading title. They restricted it to require stunning–same as any other kind of slaughter. They didn’t ban Kosher and Halal slaughter per se (at the least the latter using stunning is permissible by some interpretations of Islamic law; it’s in dispute afaik … no idea about Jewish law).
But strengthening animal rights is always a good thing, so happy to hear it.
I guess Greece doesn’t think Freedom of Religion is a very important value.
We dont live in tune with nature, nor do we treat other sentient beings well.. Im not a vegan or an eco warrior but that much seems obvious to anyone. In years to come i expect we will look back on our present farming practices as unbelievably savage.
But, since it is necessary in the here and now, should we not insist that no unnecessary pain be inflicted?
Culture/Tradition/Ideology, any kind of social act created by the human is no excuse to do barbarism.
And Europeans wonder why muslims hate them so much…
yes this is good but we know why greece did this LUL
Hope they ban circumcision next
Who gives a shit? You’re killing the animal either way so who cares if you pray or something like that before you kill it?
Greece has one of the lowest percentages of vegetarians and vegans in Europe
It also polls consistently as the country with the highest percentage of anti-semitic views in Europe.
So Controversial Opinion: Everyone here is touting this for reasons of so-called “morality” which is extremely suspect. I don’t know the rules for Hallal, but the rules for ritual Kosher slaughter are that the entire windpipe and trachea must be slides by a sharp knife with a single stroke, which is basically the invention of ethical slaughtering. So sorry guys, this just reeks of anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim sentiment, which is in fact what banning of ritual slaughter can only be, as is typical of a Christian country and has been typical for… thousands of years…
As someone who doesn’t know anything about kosher and halal “regulations”, could anyone tell me the details r.e. how god has specified animals should be killed in a certain way otherwise you can’t eat them? Not saying the whole concept is so ludicrous that it should be obvious to a very stupid child, I’d just like to know what the deific small-print is.
So much focus on the last seconds[or minute] of the life of the animal but nothing on the actual months/years where the animal lives in pure suffering, cramped condition and general insanity
To me that shows that the decision is not motivated by animal welfare
I hope this thrend continues.

If Europe wants to be the most socially advanced region, we have to prove it. Kill for rituals shall be banned. (also kill for fun, as bullfights in spain).
At last!
Why are we still bowing to stupid rules invented by people thousands of years ago, which really shouldn’t have any significance anymore in the world of today?

Well done Greece..standup to religious stupidity.
It should be banned in the entire EU.

Hmm, now let’s talk about Greek Orthodox Easter…
