We were supposed to hit peak emissions. Why won’t they stop rising? Greenhouse gas emissions are higher than ever as key leaders threaten to walk away from this year’s UN climate talks.

  1. Oh I don’t know….. Maybe it’s climate change?

  2. Global emissions per capita have plateaued according to a Carbon Brief paper. This is clearly good news. With a growing population we need to see the per capita emissions now reduce to plateau overall emissions. Albeit slowly we are getting there. FT recently reported a glut of oil and gas is now expected next year and through to end of the decade. This is largely due to China’s lower than expected demand and their investments in renewables. The signals are good but we shouldn’t be complacent

  3. I mean, animal agriculture will grow 50% by 2050. How do people not get it?

Denial that personal consumption matters is common these days. The real solution is killing all the billionaires with private jets.

Nonsense, but that’s where we are.

  4. Energy is wealth. Nobody is going to choose to be poor so, everything that can be dug up and burned will be dug up and burned. Despite any amount of speeches, agreements or hand wringing.

  5. Makes me wonder what the angry mobs will do if widespread ecological collapse leads to food shortages and severe economic turmoil. Will they hold the fossil fuel executives and their political stooges to account? Or will those stooges successfully paint some other group (immigrants, non-believers, leftists, etc) as the ones who should be attacked?

It seems to me we are already seeing the groundwork being laid for the latter scenario.

  6. There’s hope, and then looking at likely energy demand and where that energy is going to come from.
