Wow, they just realised. It reminds me of the debacle about holes in the ozone, look how quick that worked out.

But industry has no incentive to stop. And neither do any of the major governments on the planet. So we’ll keep polluting the only environment we have
The solution: standardise all bottles.
Allow companies within a country only package products in their choice of 5-6 standardised packages, that are all made of the same material that is 100% recyclable or incredibly easy to wash and simply refill. Place a 50c fee on every bottle, and encourage people to collect them and keep them in good condition, so that nothing ends up in the landfill.
