Tetraethyl lead was originally added as an octane booster to gas. It was then found that the lead caused valve seals in the engine to survive longer. After the advent of hardened valve seats in engines, lead largely was no longer necessary or beneficial.

s/ Remember the 50s/60’s big V8, cheap gas, jobs for everyone, wife in the kitchen, kids listened to parents. All went downhill when they took the lead out of petrol.
AH nostalgia for Happy Days.
Damn, this would’ve made a good Halloween costume.
