I am okay with reversing all of Halonen’s policies. Ashamed that she ever served as president.
Hyvää päivä, Suomi! The world’s eyes are on you these days. (Well, mostly on Ukraine, but the world has a lot of eyes, so some are on you.) If I understand correctly, there was a people’s petition for a referendum on NATO membership, and that was discussed today in Eduskunta. Could y’all please share what the outcome of the discussion was? What was the main parties’ positions and stuff?
Thank you very much!!
What about how this is unfolding makes Finns think that joining NATO is in any way a good idea? NATO did a lot to actively push Ukrainian policy in the direction of war with Russia despite the repeated warnings of international relations experts like Mearsheimer, Kissinger, etc. (who I detest ideologically but from a practical standpoint they are often correct about the outcomes of complex international dynamics) that NATO expansion was a massive strategic blunder that would not only serve to set Russia on high security alert (not without reason) but would also quickly escalate into a new Cold War with global consequences, up to and including the devastation of Ukraine in the course of military conflict if it came to that. And now that shit has hit the fan and NATO membership obligations are now coming into play it’s becoming clearer that NATO as a whole does not actually have the will or power to meaningfully protect its member states or allies as is more or less promised by the organization. They’ve basically walked Ukraine up to the brink of war for their own purposes and then essentially simply wished them “good luck” as they watch from the sidelines and supply arms while Ukrainians and Russians die. To be clear I do not want further NATO intervention in this conflict, I want NATO to butt out of Ukrainian affairs just as I want Russia to immediately and unilaterally withdraw from Ukraine; I’m just trying to underscore how relatively toothless NATO is being shown to be right now. Given that that’s the case, why should Finns want any part of that kind of meddling? Why should we wish to position Finland as yet another disposable pawn in NATO’s arsenal of war against the coalescence of any international geopolitical and economic blocs that Euro-American imperialists cannot either directly control or successfully subvert? The reason I am against NATO is not because I don’t care about Finland’s security and continued national sovereignty, it’s precisely because I don’t want to see Finns and Russians kill each other because they’ve been cynically exploited for geopolitical jockeying by competing imperialist powers.
Context of my perspective: am US/Finnish dual citizen born and residing in the USA, my entire paternal family lives in Finland
This world has gone insane. That treaty was made for a reason. Innocent blood will flow again if they remove it. There is no room for anti-personel mines in modern civilised society. Feels like they are trying to remove that modern and civilised part. I feel deeply ashamed of my people.

What is the Ottawa treaty?
Why would they want to cancel the Ottawa treaty?
