The Helsinki Society for Historical Lexicography along with the University of Helsinki and the University of Stockholm advertise a seminar with hideous AI slop

The point of humanities education and research is to learn about culture, preserve culture and help culture flourish. What are they doing with representing humanities education with hideous, hollow synthetic replicas of actual authentic culture? They are defaming their own field.

  2. It’s just a talk, it’s not like they can afford to hire illustrators or graphic designers every time someone comes to give a presentation. This is probably some doctoral student with few resources and no artistic training trying to add a bit of visual energy to what would otherwise be a dull text-and-logo poster.

  3. I for sure am censed and whelmed about this!

It’s just university people, what did you expect?

  4. Dude it’s a joke based on the name of the talk: “the dictionary CRAZE”.

Considering there will be, at best, 30 people in the audience I strongly doubt they had the budget to hire an artist to do something similar

Not to mention that the goal of that image was to catch attention and I guess it’s done a pretty good job!

I *really* have a tough time understanding what the issue even would be.

  5. I’ve been in Stockholm, can confirm that’s authentically how academics there look like!

  6. Atrocious. I am from the Media department of Aalto where people actually do use AI occasionally for projects because it is relevant for us. No one would be caught dead with such a horrid AI rendition, it’s not just that it’s AI, it’s really bad AI. For everyone saying ‘Poor presenter had no budget’ let me hit you with something crazy…photographs! Historical paintings!

They are collecting dust in your university archive and going unused in favor of THIS.

  7. They could have used AI to make a more inclusive picture at least, but no – let’s have AI make a picture with only white, mostly male, and just middle-aged people in it. Oh and one of the two women in it should surely show some skin.

Cause that’s what academic discussion is all about.

  8. I think we should give more respect to GenAI tools. We have systems that can create novel pictures and videos. And the AI systems have been for public to use only for two years.

Okay, AP’s picture is rather tasteless, but still, it is a great achievement of science that we even have those systems!
