I met this German while solo backpacking in Thailand and we ended up traveling together for a month. I fell completely in love with her. I told her how I felt just before we parted ways because she had to go back to university. We always communicated in English but she left a note for me in the back of my journal in German—I’ve tried to translate it myself but her handwriting is difficult to decipher, and with zero knowledge of German I can’t guess many of the words she’s spelling out. Can anyone help??

  1. Dear Sidney,

I don’t know when these words will reach you or if youll ever be able to translate this *but* there are things I really want to tell you:

No matter what happens to us, I will never forget us traveling (an exaggeration of your adventure, think funny antics and stuff) together despite our age.
What we had was special (hard to decipher honestly).

You have inspired me so much to be more like my true self.

And I want to tell you that I admire you from the bottom of my heart (idk it reads more like admiring like you would an influential figure/mentor not too sure bc of missing context)

No matter what happens, you’ll always be part of my heart.

I know from the bottom of my heart that this will be the start of something bigger than a holiday travel.

I will miss you dearly and want to thank you for your braveness in putting your trust in me [a stranger in a foreign land (at the time)].

*Some bits are hard to decipher and some are kinda German-specific so I paraphrased where necessary. I also omitted the bit that was written in English for brevity’s sake*

It’s a very heartfelt letter, lucky you 🙂

  2. Dear Sydney,
I don’t know when or if these words will ever reach you, but there are so many things I want to tell you:
I want you to know that, no matter what happens with (between) us, I will forever be thankful to have been on this crazy journey with you.
    You are so special, Sydney.
    What we have is special.
I want you to know that you inspire me to stand up for myself (page 1)

and that I admire you from the bottom of my heart.
No matter what happens, you will forever be a part of my mosaic (meaning: heart/life?)
I hope (and know :)) that this is the beginning of something very special.
    I’m gonna miss you Syd.
Thank you for being brave enough to trust me and to give life a chance.
‘You are so loved by me’

Thank you for having the courage to trust me and to give life (could also be something else instead of “life”, hard to read) a chance.

    You are so loved…
