Yeah and that 53% support was BEFORE Putler attacked Ukraine. Propably 65% by now.
How many ppl voted 100 thousand?

I don’t understand. Putin keeps complaining about more NATO, but yet his actions will likely lead to exactly that outcome. Though, would there need to be a referendum?
Join us Northern brothers
Unity favoring? No problem Russia can help with that.
Well that escalated quickly!
The Finnish NATO membership discussion has always been revolved around the ”NATO-option”, which has to be cashed in when the ”window is open”, and there’s opportunity.
In 2014 Russians closed the NATO window by annexing Crimea. In 2022, the neighborhood got shelled, and the NATO window was shattered to peaces as a result. So I’d say, it’s now open, but in a different, permanent way!
What are the disadvantages to joining NATO? I understand the country needs to spend something like 2% of GDP on the military – what is Finland’s current spend? And what else does a nation need to commit to?

Idiotic. There is absolutely NO benefit to joining NATO at all. Now follows some actual arguments, try not to comment if you can’t think of anything except “muh NATO”,
* Ukraine did not need to be a member at all to get all the support they are currently getting
* Trying to join pissed off Putin enough to invade them, why should we aggravate further?
* Putin already told Finland to not even think about it, or we’re next
* Being a member of NATO promises absolutely NOTHING
* Being a member of NATO means being asked to fight other NATO countries wars
* Being a member is not a deterrent, it’s more a provocation of war especially if neighboring countries are not a member
* NATO membership is stupidly expensive
* NATO is 70 year old policy that has been proven to do absolutely NOTHING at preventing armed conflict at all
Now on the 6 NATO articles:
1. Countries need to solve disputes via peaceful means – We already do this, we do not provoke war and this has nothing to do with being in NATO or not
2. All members must contribute to other members defense effort and sovereign growth – Finland already gives billions for such things and we are not even a member, joining means we are obligated to give even more
3. Members must develop their own defenses so as not to be a burden for other members – We already do this as laid out in our own defense plans which are strictly checked by experts
4. Members have to talk together when one member is threatened – WE ALREADY DO THIS! Presidentti already meets with nation leaders whenever there is dispute of ANY kind be they a NATO member or not, we don’t turn our backs on anyone
5. If a member is attacked all shall agree to help defend – If any decent democratic sovereign nation (eg. Ukraine) is attacked, Finland would help, we do not need to be a part of NATO for this and ultimately having to do so should not need to compromise our own security back home, which it could if we were a member and had to split our forces outside of Finland
6. Same as five – If one of our strategic points or installations is bombed then obviously it’s a declaration of war and one which we would absolutely defend ourselves on so nothing changes here either
For Finland to join NATO there needs to be a good reason. Being scared sh!tless of your neighbour whilst he punches another guy is not good enough. If Putin attacked us, we are fighting anyway and it’s not like other nations are gonna sit back and just watch, same that we are not and no one else is whilst Ukraine is at war.
Joining NATO would just infuriate Putin even more already. Joining whether or not he is in power is again, another debate as if Russia had less nutjob leader then there is STILL no reason for us to join. “Just because” is not a good enough reason. NATO has been a “bully alliance” before, and Finland should have no part in that.
The real threat at the end of the day is nuclear war. So piss off the guy with all the nukes and hypersonic missiles by joining, or think that allying up with a bunch of other countries and combining “manpower-n-shizz” is gonna help, when it takes only a pushed button to wipe out millions.
We already have “enhanced partnership” with NATO anyway, nothing else further needed.
Let’s have some comments about this in this thread, but smart replies only, not “b-b-but it’s an alliance” etc.

Actually Finland would end up giving away a big territory for a US base, where americans would totally rule and fill it with nuclear bombs. American soldiers would also be protecetd by any kind of bad behaviour in finland, because they would live in an american territory within your country. I would say it has more cons than pros
If Finland would choose to join NATO now, anyone knows how long would it take to make it through the process? Are we talking about months, years?
Quick, hide this from Putin and join NATO asap
Well done Putin, you played yourself!
Just FYI – around 1400 people took this survey.
It doesn’t show anything, that’s not how stats and percentages work.
I wonder how those IDK persons survive in real life if they cannot answer question that is literally life and death question.
Im on the side of not joining NATO just yet, i think our defence is so strong, that Russian forces could be held off indefinitely by ourselves, they dont have enough money to keep attacking other nations nonstop, war is not cheap.
Maybe Finland will turn the lion on its flag back to the correct original eastward-facing direction. Currently the lion faces Sweden which is a bit silly to avoid offending Russia.
I don’t really get it. Could anyone explain why the majority wants to join Nato now? I mean it has been fine for Finland to stay neutral, and it will be so, Russia won’t take any action for as long as Finland remains idle. Why should Finland take such a bold move then? I understand that joining Nato will essentially fortify the military and help prepare ahead for the bad, but it will likely increase the threat as well…
Hulluja kaikki
How is the military situation here? Could we defend ourselves against Russia?
Bruh moment
I stand with what president Niinistö stated yesterday in an interview – applying would take months to go through the bureaucratic processes of member countries, and during that time we’d be open for any sort of harrassment from Russia without a way to call NATO to our aid.
He also mentioned that there’s the option that Finland or Sweden could be asked to join instead of filing for membership. That way the political hoops have already been jumped through, and we could just step inside the circle. This is the better option for both Finland and Sweden right now, we just need to get that invitation without asking for it directly.
Something about turntables turning
Hasn’t Russia left Finland alone since WWII precisely because Finland doesn’t deliberately antagonised Russia and remained strictly neutral? Isn’t it better to stay that way? Wouldn’t joining NATO be inviting Russia to sabotage Finland’s peace and prosperity?
