UK expected to give Ukraine Storm Shadow missiles to strike inside Russia

1. Britain is expected to supply Storm Shadow missiles for use by Ukraine on targets inside Russia, now that US president Joe Biden has agreed to do the same for the similar American long-range Atacms weapon.

   Keir Starmer, the prime minister, said at the G20 summit that the UK recognised it needed to “double down” on its support for Ukraine, while diplomatic sources briefed they expected other European countries to follow the US lead.

   The prime minister said that, while he was “not going to get into operational details”, he recognised the need to do more to help Ukraine, whose electricity network was seriously damaged by a wave of Russian bombing on Sunday.

   “I’ve been really clear for a long time now, we need to double down. We need to make sure Ukraine has what is necessary for as long as necessary, because we cannot allow Putin to win this war,” the prime minister said.

   Russia, however, accused the west of escalation and said that Biden risked adding “fuel to the fire” in Ukraine, and while Donald Trump remained silent on the issue, his son Don Jr accused the military industrial complex of wanting to get “world war three going”.

   Storm Shadow missiles have a range of about 250km, similar to the US Atacms, and have in the past been given to Kyiv by the UK and France to strike targets inside Ukraine’s internationally recognised borders.

   But the US retained an effective veto on their use because it supplies a guidance system and repeated lobbying by the UK had failed to shift the US position, which has only begun to soften after the election victory of Donald Trump earlier this month.

2. Ukrains have had SS missiles for a year, and the range on them doesnt allow much penetration into russia anyway, especially as they are launched from planes that are having issues with enemy SAM coverage.

3. Am I missing something or would this cause WW3? NATO supplied, NATO guided missiles being shot into Russia.
   Don’t get me wrong Russia firing missiles from behind their border is beyond fucked up. I feel like many many more people (not just Russians and Ukrainians) could die because of this. Is the other option trying to negotiate for peace? I’m not exactly an expert but I’m also quite keen not to go war myself. Completely open to hearing the other side of the argument.

7. Good, this should have happened months ago. Russia only knows cruelty and violence at this point, strength is the only language they communicate in.

   People saying that this is WW3: the west has crossed so many ‘red lines’ laid down by Putin that there words now ring hollow, they can’t kick the Ukrainians out of Kursk region, how are they going to wage war on Europe and America?

   Nuclear war is self assured destruction and the only two places the Kremlin cares about, Moscow and St Petersburg, would be destroyed within minutes of them pushing their own red button. This is the right thing to do and Ukraine needs to be given more missiles.

13. Russia brings in tons of suicide drones from Iran and fires them into Ukrainian apartment buildings, hospitals, schools and markets. That’s okay. They bring in massive amounts of artillery shells from North Korea nad fire them into Ukraine and that’s okay. They bring in ten thousand North Korean soldiers and are looking for more, and that’s okay too somehow.

    But if the US let’s the Ukrainians use missiles to hit into Russia that’s somehow an outrage?
