imagine a world where china uses their influence for good. I doubt any significant change will happen under Xi but this is at least a positive step, even if very small
„Xi responded to Biden’s remarks in a meaningful way.
Announcing the summit’s results, the Chinese side said Xi told Biden that „China cannot tolerate conflict and chaos on the Korean Peninsula, and will not sit idly by while China’s strategic security and core interests are threatened.““
What chaos?
There is troops sent to Ukraine.. there is literally nothing happening on the Korean Peninsula
To Xi, Biden kept Trump tariffs in place, has been hawkish on China economically and militarily for his whole term. Does Biden actually expect Xi to heed his calls for help?
China’s in the business of doing business, and no wars means business will continue to grow. That’s been their stance regardless of who’s in the White House, not because Biden asked nicely.
Combine this with Xi also pushing for more positive trade agreements, such as a free trade agreement with Australia, then it looks like China is taking a great deal of care to be seen in a positive light.
Looks to me like they are posturing to receive more sympathetic treatment from other nations in the lead up to Trumps proposed tariffs.
We will have to wait and see what their actions reflect in the long term. They may say one thing but do another. Though for now they seem to at least want all options to be on the table for how they respond over the coming few years. That’s pretty normal.
