  1. The loss of biodiversity is so underrated. Millions of years of evolution lost forever. You never know if those species possessed a quality that was incredibly beneficial to the environment. Even if that wasn’t the case, humans rarely seem to appreciate the intrinsic value of unique species

  2. This is a total tragedy.

Shorebirds like this beautiful creature are utterly unappreciated, just because they’re somewhat obscure and seen as drab and not pretty. Their habitats aren’t always idyllic to the human eye, so humanity thinks that gives them license to wantonly bulldoze them.

I remember my first and only time seeing a curlew (not a slender-billed one, the ‘standard’ type- the Eurasian curlew). It burst out from under me and flew away. Gorgeous, it was. Ever since then, shorebirds have been a special interest of mine.

I so hope we get our act together and protect these unloved birds, but I don’t think we will. Humans only like what’s bright, and flashy, and loud, and pleasing to them. Drab, plain things can go to hell in their minds.

  3. Widespread agriculture – growing crops to feed cattle and chicken. I have to cut down my meat and dairy consumption to zero.
