> Hader’s daughter didn’t have particularly kind words for It Chapter 2. “So my kid did go, ‘I saw you in It.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, what do you think?'” he remembered. “She was like, ‘First movie was better.’ I was like, ‘Okay.'”
> Hader said that his kids’ criticism of his work doesn’t particularly bother him. “I like it that they don’t — I’m their dad, that’s the best,” he said. “They don’t really give a s— about it.”
That’s because they took Fukunaga’s script for the first one and cannibalized it into a good movie. They didn’t have a good script for the base for the second, they just had Muscietti who showed them how much he needed that handicap.
Compared to the kids in part 1, the chemistry amongst the adult cast just wasn’t there. Maybe that was intentional to reflect the distance that had grown between them, but it just felt like a cast that wasn’t very close.
IIRC this is a quote lifted from his recent interview with Ted Danson. Expect another 13 articles from their 70 min podcast.
Part 2 had it’s moments for sure, but man there was some questionable stuff in there.
It’s only as bad as it is because, for some bizarre reason, they decided to make it a comedy. If they’d leaned in to the horror in the same way the first movie did, it could have been great.
The adult part of IT has always suffered though
The first one is way better but hey that’s basically the case with every single sequel
I love both parts of IT but in both the 1990 version and the modern version the kids are amazing and overshadow the adults in the second half.
Bill’s own daughter is a Hader hater
Part I was fantastic….the kids WAAYYYY outperformed the adults in Part II.
Love that EW got a whole article out of a throwaway joke he told during his conversation on Ted Danson’s podcast.
So she’s a Bill Hater? *I’ll show myself out*
The second one tries to weave the kids back in, instead of focusing on the adults solving a supernatural mystery. First half of “It 2” is great, and the second half really starts circling the block when the CGI de-aged kids appear.
She’s right you know
I remember watching part 2 in cinema with friends, I got stuck laughing at something from the film for like 10 minutes and couldn’t stop, felt bad for the 2 other people in the cinema
While I agree that the first was better, I thought that Bill Hader did a great job and was a perfect casting.
The adult part always suffers because of how the novel was structured. The 2019 version did not stray far from the book which I appreciated. I think part of the reason for the dip in quality was because instead of filming the child scenes all at once, they waited and ended up having to use CGI and manufactured voiceovers for the kid scenes in Chapter 2 which is very distracting and obvious.
I agree with that sentiment. Part I had its Goonies-esque charm, so a little bit of levity and humor fits ok there, and it still mananged to be fairly scary. Part II feels almost farcical at points, like something Sam Raimi would’ve slept-walked his way thru directing.
Yee the second one was ass compared to the first
I liked part 2. Part 1 was definitely better, but that’s also kind of how the book is. It starts really strong and the ending is somewhat weak.
I’m surprised so many people dislike It chapter 2. While it wasn’t as great as the first, I still considered it a very good movie.
Excited to see Muschietti and Skarsgard return for “Welcome to Derry”
I agree. IT pt. I with Tim Curry was better.
It tried to hard with the comedy, the first one had a better balance
It would have been so so easy to make a good part 2. Why do people suck at writing!?
Whatever accent James McAvoy was going for in 2 was world breaking. Couldn’t get past it.
The first movie felt like a popcorn horror flick. A really good blend of horror, comedy, and drama with some great performances.
The second felt like they were going for a straight comedy, it felt off the entire time. Some scenes popped up out of nowhere and it never built on the tension of the first film at all.
Really a shame considering how talented the adult cast is.
She’s right. Bill was fine in the movie, but the second movie was mostly just kind of a lesser retread of the first.
Jeez. Didn’t realize so many people disliked part 2. I actually really enjoyed it. I’d even go as far as to say just as much as part 1.
Hader was great in IT Chapter 2. The movie itself was just not very good.
Although I think he was a great Richie, it is kind of obvious casting. Ever since it was announced, I’ve wished I could have seen him cast against type as the adult Bill instead.
I wouldn’t blame bill for that but yeah. OG was better. Hader makes most projects better.
I like both movies. I know I’m in the minority but I think they each have charm.
