For some odd reason politicians that are absolutley hated here, are pro Russian, go against Latvian national interests and are involved in multitude of shady deals with countries money to the point of being prosecuted – end up in EU parlament and immune to prosecution.

Many Russians in Latvia automatically support Russia whatever she is doing, and do not support Latvia. This is a shame since many of them are 2nd or 3rd gen born and lived life in Latvia, but still cleave to some the country of their great-grandparents due to tribalism.
Lucky there are many other Russians who are more integrated, and together with people from all backgrounds, work towards a just and prosperous Latvia.

Along with the other points, the EP until now had been regarded as a sort of a cushy retirement place/dumping ground for failed local parliamentarians.
I think the local Russian party sent her there because she was stirring the shit a bit too much even for them, so instead of publicly distancing they put her where she could do less damage.
