Somaliland presidential election: Breakaway region in quest for statehood • FRANCE 24 English

Voting was underway Wednesday in Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland in a key presidential election that was delayed for two years. More than 1 million people are expected to cast votes at more than 2,000 polling stations, with some 28 international observers spread across the country. President Muse Bihi Abdi of the ruling Kulmiye Party is seeking a second term after seven years in office, during which he has pushed for Somaliland’s international recognition. FRANCE 24’s Olivia Bizot reports.

  7. since Somaliland endipendency in 1991 , somaliland was peaceful, democratic , and stable Country that stands it's own legs along .
    with in 33-years period somalind has been ruling 5-elected president that transfered power from one to another , unfortunately we did't get suitable responses fro international communities such as recognition and other necessary support ,
    but today we hope that they will understand somaliland have a right to recognise

  18. Their is NO WAY a single clan in the whole of Northern regions of Somalia claim a country or independence. There are so many clans living in Northern Somalia who are against what this single clan is claiming. If referendum is carried out we are sure most of Somali citizens in Northern Somalia will vote for unity of great Somalia. Therefore don’t be misled by minority who have individual interests.

  29. Despite not being internationally recognized, Somaliland has a well-trained and well-equipped military, defined borders, a growing economy, a coastline, its own currency, and abundant natural resources such as oil, minerals, and agricultural products.

  43. Somaliland is just one small clan in Somalia, and all the leaders of local political parties are from that one clan, you don't know the reality on the ground.
