We are stepping up our support for Ukraine. For the first time, the EU will finance the purchase and delivery of weapons and equipment to a country under attack. We are also strengthening our sanctions against the Kremlin.

EU is becoming a military alliance
May as well ship them out javelins now.
Good.
Might be a silly question, but at what stage do we become “involved” in this conflict?
France is in the EU and has nuclear weapons, if the EU is providing weapons to the country Russia is invading, then does that not essentially make them involved, thus escalating the chance of a nuclear war?
Maybe I’m way off.
Get the president of Ukraine on the phone with Gerry Adams as soon as possible.
Hurry up and get us an EU army and reinforce all of Eastern Europe. Can’t be having Putin deciding one day to point nukes to scare people and then invading and bullying weaker countries.
Let’s fucking go!
Is it too early to send in Bertie?
It’s a waste of money given the war is basically over.

I say a fair few Special Forces members will suddenly take a leave of absence or “resign” from EU countries military to sign up to the Ukraine Legion. Then be back in uniform when the conflict ends. Putin filled out the Donbass rebels by sending “resigned” soldiers.
There are a few problems with this:
1: It undermines Ireland’s neutrality, as we are inherently funding this too.
2: Only a democratically elected government should have the power to do this. There are 27 nations with a veto on EU treaty/policy, it does not operate like a democratic government (it would be like a TD from every county having a veto on government policy, in Ireland – which would be undemocratic).
3: The EU and US are egging on insurgency in Ukraine, and are not prioritizing sitting Ukraine and Russia down for a diplomatic solution. That’s the difference between a war that could last up to a decade+ (with a huge death toll), and one that could be brought to an end early/immediately (while the deaths haven’t yet hit four figures).
Fair play to Irish government for abstaining from providing lethal weapons and instead providing non lethal:

The mouth breathers in this thread and on r/Ireland the past few days won’t be happy.
