Honestly that article nearly reads like propaganda.
>led by the Social Democrats, with their history of close ties to Russia.
eh what?
Even for a article about this particular topic, this was a surprisingly big pile of bullshit.
So many words, so little of substance. I feel like the author is a talented writer but did invest much less time than needed because they felt like they would have understood everything without.
Ah shit… Not again…
Propaganda nothing more nothing less !
The article is correct in that Germany is shifting policy pretty dramatically, which is appropriate considering the lack of inhibition of Russia to start an invasion. NATO already is completely capable of defending its own territory but I am uncomfortable that Putin may think we are not willing to do so. And demonstrating this makes more military investment necessary. If the 100bn is the right amount and where it is needed is a different question.
I recently read a comment that somebody is proud of a buffed military. I have to disagree, military is a tragic necessity. Being a soldier is an honourable occupation but I am happy if the military stays a footnote in everyday life.
I am still fundamentally against exporting weapons outside the EU and NATO but am understanding and content with the decision made.
I welcome the idea to make us as the EU not critically dependent on imports. Trade is fine, as long as we can cut it if needed without crippling ourselves.
And finally I hope that within this framework we can soon go back to more naïve international relations. I am optimistic that the principled scepticism of SPD and Green youth organizations and the non-Wagenknecht part of the Left will be able to rise once again. As cliché it sounds, proper peace can only be achieved with our neighbours, not against them. (Edit: explicitly only once the aggression ceased)
Hence, I disagree with the euphoria of the article. Let us sleep and dream of a better tomorrow.
Won’t even read the article. Germany is an economic powerhouse and given the world we live in today they are responsible for having a military capable of preserving themselves and those around them. That’s all.
“[…] speaking on the condition of anonymity in order to candidly discuss German political mores.”
Stopped reading there. This makes no sense. If you have an opinion, you have to defend yourself in a debate.
I hate stuff like this-
It makes it seem like germany is doing something wrong or is something to be afraid of.
As a german I‘m really tired of this stuff.
This article, or at least the headline, clearly plays with the fact that nobody thought Germany could do anything in the 30s or even in the lead up to WWI
Same as then, we don’t have the most resources or land or population. Still same as then we could refocus at rapid speed to military focus. Luckily now (I hope) we are the good guys.
