Wales second homes could face 300% council tax hikes

  1. Forgive me if I’m wrong, am I right to assume this won’t effect renting as the tenant pays, nor AirBnB if you have it listed for at least 90 days of the year?

Specifically it hurts people who can keep a second property empty, which I don’t have an issue with as they can afford to keep a second property empty.

  2. Does it make sense to drive out people who already pay full tax without using council services most of the time? And replace them with people who use council services most of the time and will likely be claiming council tax reduction etc.

  3. My guess is that one of the following will happen:

a – they can afford a second home so aren’t worried by a CT hike

b – they’ll rent it out for a few weeks on airbnb to pay for the CT

Edit: c – claim that their second home is their main home (probably by registering to vote there)

  4. _“Where do they think we’re going to get this 300% from? I can’t afford it, that’s for sure and I’m quite sure a lot of other people can’t afford it”_

said Mr Martin of the Home Owners of Wales group, completely missing the point as the river of freshly cried tears meanders slowly past in the background.

(Goes on to say _”We’re financially able to take on the Welsh government”_)

  5. I like how the “group” they quote as being against it is just some random Facebook group for people who own second homes in Wales.

Is that the quality of reporting we can expect from the BBC now? Disgraceful.

  6. > “They love Wales, they love Welsh people, they love the Welsh language, they love the Welsh culture. That’s why they ~~have a home there~~ **are forcing the Welsh out**”

Seriously how tone deaf can they be. If they love Wales so much just bloody move there, or if you’re unwilling then do what other people do who:

    – Really like a place
    – Can’t live there year round

    And just visit on holiday.

  7. Standby for people moaning about how expensive holiday cottages will become.

As an aside, people asking for how this will be policed need to experience the ineptitude of local councils – they’re hopeless.

  8. How does affect landlords at all when council tax is paid by the tenant? Isn’t this just (again) making life more difficult for people on lower incomes?

Now if council tax was paid by property owners, and not occupants, this’d be fantastic.

  9. Majority are struggling to buy one home and there’s people who has more than one. Even if I was rich, I would still have only one home here in the UK and buy one in a different country, not have 20 homes in the UK.
