Legit why is it so hard to find anywhere to just chill out in central at night?

  1. You could probably find a Michelin star restaurant at 2AM in Athens. London has no food places beyond McDonald’s at night and it’s just very annoying

  2. I mean, yeah. As a chef myself, I don’t want to be cooking past 10pm. We come in early morning to prep and do a really long day. There’s a shortage of chefs, so restaurants will struggle to really convince any of us to serve food beyond that time. Most days I do breakfast, lunch and dinner in one day. It’s really tough.

It’s not the same as serving drinks. It’s a really full-on job, and often do 15 hour shifts taking no breaks. Hardly get time to even check my phone for 5 minutes. Sorry pal.

But yes I agree, it sucks London closes early compared to other cities. Would be nice to have a drink in the later hours.

  3. Yeah, it’s honestly annoying that most places open past 10 or 11 are generally unhealthy fast food places or kebab shops. Options are annoyingly limited

  4. I was there last weekend and I had the same feeling, to be one of the most important and vibrant cities in the world I felt a little disappointed about the city night life.

Still a great place tho ( working hours)

  5. Ah what’s the name of that falafel place in Soho open all night? It’s where all the taxi drivers go. That’s a good one but I agree overall we don’t have the kind of 24 hour diner culture you find in other big cities.

  6. Because we get up early and go to work…aint nobody got time for siestas here

  7. London is not and has never been at 24 hour city though. Its only within the last 10 years that the tube has run 24 hours day, and still, that’s only at weekends! Almost everything shuts overnight. Even trying to find a maccies that is open past 2am is hard.

  8. When has London ever been a 24 hour city?

Honestly beyond a few places and areas, its pretty much dead by 12 and empty by 1pm save a few stragglers. I’ve filmed in London between 3pm and 6am and the only people out at that time are homeless

  9. There are plenty of places in the world where people don’t go out to eat until midnight— try South America. Or even Spain. My body appreciates being in full digestion mode by about 10PM.

  10. Quite lame, I’ve just discovered it tonight as my first few days in London. Totally unexpected

  11. Why should it be 24 hours, people actually live everywhere in the city. It’s not like some cities where there’s a downtown area nobody actually lives in.

And if there was a demand for it it would exist. There’s very little demand for it so only very little of it exists. If the free hand of the market can’t work in London where can it.

  12. I mean this is a cultural thing as well, we just tend to eat earlier in the uk. As someone who works in a restaurant you very rarely get people coming in after 9. I mean think about it, who is actually going out for dinner past 10pm? Sure there’s a few people but the vast majority have already eaten. Why would restaurants open later than that if there’s very little demand? This isn’t just a London thing, it’s just part of British culture to eat dinner around 6-8pm so restaurants don’t stay open much later than that

  13. Balans and VQ have 24hr restaurants across the city, with alcohol iirc.

  14. This happened to me when in London after the theatre show ended at 10:30 – no where to eat. And after a concert ended. So odd that things close that early, even on a Friday night.

  15. Why disrespect the king of falafel like that.

If you don’t wake up with the violent shits, did you even have a night out.

  16. Most people who would come into a restaurant after 10-11 are grotesquely drunk monsters. We start drinking somewhere between 3 and 5, so by that point the majority of people are already pretty tanked up. Source: the last 11 years working in London hospo.

That aside, most kitchens start prep super early in the morning, and chefs get paid very little considering food costs etc. Restaurants are expensive, but they operate on razor thin margins especially high quality ones, so prices would have to increase dramatically. Yes, late night food is significantly better in several other major cities, but the places there also tend to operate on very different hours.

  17. > Our so called 24 hour city

Literally no one calls it that though?

  18. Who calls it a 24 hour city? We have monthly threads about this.

  19. If there was a demand, it would be supplied.

Most people eating that time will be drunk, so while may suggest they want a healthier meal, but (dietary requirements aside) will choose the takeaway (McDicks and the like).

Don’t get me wrong, I eat around 9/9:30pm, but I cannot imagine anyone choosing to eat after 10 who is not drunk or a student or unemployed or an insomniac. Either way, there’s no market for it…
