I don’t want to sound like an imperialist but how many of these small countries were once part of a European empire? They don’t want European government but they want its money, figures. Independence means independence as far as I’m concerned and given how tight money is at the moment I’d rather it go on our own citizens, sorry.
Plot twist: the CO2 reduction that needs to happen is the population and Thanos was a foreshadowing.
They should build their own COP29, with blackjack and hookers.
And here I am cutting my lips with those stupid caps that you have to tear apart from the bottle. And my melting paper straws
This all just sucks so much. I have no opinion, I’m just mad.
“Sir Keir Starmer was one of only two G7 leaders to attend the conference, the other being Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s prime minister. …
The US, China, France and Canada chose not to attend.”
Theyll get a higher settlement in the end anyway.
Deeply funny that the paying countries dont include China and the Arab gulf states.
White saviourism is deeply embedded within many Europeans. Naivety too of course, anyone with roots in developing countries knows exactly where this money was going, the highly educated elite leadership of Europe are surprisingly the dimmest people around.
Although we should still strive to not pollute. I must say that i think the ship has sailed when it comes to global warming. We’re not going to be able to slow it down the way things are going.
We’re doing better on the litter front i think.
No one wants to pay lol. WWF thinks the budget should be $1 trillion? Lol yeah okay.
There’s nothing to gain for the big nations and there’s nothing the small nations can do about it. Nothing will be done sadly.
Endless drain on western countries
The “vibe” is shifting, not surprised USA and other G7 countries didn’t show up. If I was a small country like that I’d be less worried about “getting paid” and more worried about getting invaded in world where it back to “might makes right”
What a shitshow. The gist:
* The only item of interest is a $100bn transfer from “rich to poor nations.” Recipients want this to be $1trn. Offers were less than that.
* Ostensibly the money is to compensate island nations vulnerable to sea levels… but sounds like it has extended in various ways.
* Starmer & Meloni only G7 attendees, presumably because they are freshmen and need to be seen in an international leader-ish light.
* Azerbaijan’s president is host. He praised fossil fuels and invited the Taliban to attend.
* All sorts of politics happening…. none of it useful or even related to climate change.
* No good faith at all.
It’s an absolute shitshow of an event. Countries send tons of activists on a free holiday and every year there is some sort of deal that they struggle to get over the line. They eventually it gets over the line like it’s some sort of monumental agreement. The agreement is almost always, more public money leaving the state to NGOs.
Ireland’s transport ministry and friends have been out there for a week. Looking for ways to “unlock new, innovate sources of finance”…..which means taxes.
How much control do we even have that these poor countries are transitioning away from coal and fossil fuels? Europe is going to self-destruct with all our good intentions, giving away power to authoritarian nations isnt going to make the world a better place.
Western countries destroying their power generation and manufacturing on this carbon reduction while the largest pollution makers for GHG is China and India. Zero accountability
We are soooo fucked. The house is on fire, and we are discussing how much we are willing to pay the fire brigade.
Why should Europe hinder it’s others don’t do it
It’s a cash grab. While the intent is noble, the money will be corrupted by political people, NGOs, and business contractors. Watch and see how quickly $300B can be consumed.
When it starts out with setting the price for destroying the planet, and not about how to save it, it is kinda moot anyways.
I guess we either pay now or pay later when mountains of refugees land on our shores looking for a cooler climate.
As is if these country use the money for “climate adaptation”. They just want cash to boost their economy.

Wait… Our paper straws are not helping?

Well, we all know where that €300m will end up.
I don’t understand the handout mentality.
