According to the Telegram post from the unit that uploaded this video, Ukraine was not able to accept and effectuate a surrender (meaning take the Russian into custody as a POW).

Some may think this is a war crime, but it is not. The Russian had no legally surrendered because to do so requires not only that the Russian offer surrender, but also that Ukraine be able to accept the surrender by taking him in as a POW.

As this Ukrainian unit did not have the ability to take him in as a POW (probably because this FPV drone did not have enough battery to walk him all the way back to Ukrainian positions), there were only two choices: (1) eliminate the enemy Russian soldier, or (2) let him go (in which case he would almost certainly head back to Russian lines – where he would be re-armed and sent back on another assault on Ukrainian positions).

  1. This is hard to watch. But what choice did the Ukrainian drone operator have? He could not let him go, and risk this Russian soldier returning to battle and killing his Ukrainian brothers, leaving their blood on his hands. War is hell.

  2. War crime or not (which is probably more the case of technology outpacing the conventions), it’s still grotesque behavior to draw it all out.

  3. We see Russians executing Ukrainian prisoners and rightly condemn them. This isn’t any different.

Bad look, should have tried to escort him to Ukrainian lines and only attacked if he ran.

People don’t like to talk about how tragic it is for all these Russians to be getting killed for nothing. Some of them are orcs, but most of them are people who wish the war would end.

I can’t understand why they don’t revolt against their leadership who are responsible for all of this, but even so this man should have been spared. The FPV operator could have found an armed target.

  4. In the beginning , if I’m reading his body language right , it’s almost like he’s asking where do I go?

  5. A uniformed solier of an invading, genocidal, army who regularly targets civilians and kills PoWs making some hand gestures to try and save his life when the tables are turned, = 100% fair game.

  6. The drone operator toyed with him to extend his terror. That’s not OK. If you need to kill him do so.

  7. Man I always wonder how miserable either side feels when they have nothing and are just trying to run away from a drone.

  8. I murder people but then at the last moment I’m all gentle and kind – lets talk and hug with knife in hand

  9. Killing like this is definitely something they need to avoid but at the same time, if i don’t have the resources to take you in and feed you and bathe and clothe you, i can’t just let you go.

  10. I cannot know how far he was from the Ukrainian lines and I can only judge from this very brief video, but I wish he had been allowed to surrender. I do not know if that was possible. Another of a long line of tragedies taking place in Ukraine now.

  11. He wouldn’t be a gonner if he wasn’t in Ukraine fighting. I cant pity any orcs after seeing all the war crimes of murder and rape. And the vids I have seen are only a scratch of what they have committed.

  12. There’s too much pearl clutching in this thread considering the TWO separate groups of Ukrainian POWs executed by firearms within the last couple weeks.

Massive difference in this situation and anyone with two brain cells can understand.

  13. dont invade other countries. dont expect anyone to send the EVAC for an invader. he made his choice when he invaded ukraine. its all about choices. War also isnt a game where u can just call a timeout. it doesnt work like that. better him than ukrainians.

  14. A survivor of a russian assault squad going back to his lines being killed by a FPV drone. Nothing more. You CAN surrender to a spotter drone, but you can’t surrender to a 5 minutes battery explosive FPV drone, it’s like trying to surrender to an ATGM. Yeah, war is hell, go back home russians.

  15. Somebody posted a fantastic study of the responsibility of drone pilots to accept prisoners. Unfortunately I don’t have the link, but the law isnt as cut and dry as you’d think.

A surrendering soldier has to make a genuine motion of surrender, but should only do so when it’s feasible. Enemy soldiers should make an attempt to take prisoners, when it’s possible. Due to active combat, logistics, distance, etc, its not always possible to take prisoners.

They used the example of soldiers surrendering to an airplane that was flying low, strafing enemy personel. Its not possible for that aircraft to stop, land, & take prisoners, despite a few guys throwing their hands up last minute.

  16. Too many people overthinking it! Guy kill himself the moment he set foot in Ukraine to kill, rape, steal, and been a terrorist.

  17. Fucking hell I hate this, I also fucking hate when orcs kill actual POWs and torture them.

  18. For ukraine to counter russian fpv drone hits on personnel, maybe develop a shield similar to a riot shield. Maybe kevlar, thin layer of steel, and rubber. Could be effective and save ukrainian soldiers lives. Better than taking cover at the last second. And if injured from a hit, could buy them time to hang on long enough for evac. Glory to Ukraine.

  19. Not to joke or anything but thats totally rob dyrdek. Can’t tell me any different

  20. Ahh that’s a tough watch.

You wanna know why you feel “slightly” bad fam!?

Because your from a country that respects the Geneva convention when it comes to surrender

At the same time…Some of them don’t. We’re all angry by the countless Ukrainian POW war crimes we’ve seen.

At the end of the day. War is war and people die. Sometimes there isn’t a clear right from wrong.

If you want to save yourself? Don’t go to war. If he wouldn’t have been in this situation, he wouldn’t have forced the FPV pilot to have to choose.

Sometimes you don’t get a second chance..

  21. I recall seeing this video posted on here several days, maybe a couple weeks ago.

  22. I feel bad, but not for the Russian. You know there has to be some level of guilt on the drone operator.

  23. We do not know what would happen if he was holding a banner that read I surrender in Ukranian, or waving a white flag. They could send out a spotter drone to guide him back If so.

If I were russian I would have a waterproofed surrender banner / white flag in my top pocket at all times
Secret from the commanders of course.

  24. This shit happens 1000 times a day between lions and their prey.

Lion doesn’t go back second-guessing their decision. It’s survival. We’re no different.

We would be if it weren’t for our power-hungry “leaders”.

  25. At least he had more time to reflect on the consequences of his actions, then most Ukrainian Civilians victim had time to say good bye to their love ones.

    Slava Urkaine.

  26. Russians have no empathy towards the Ukranian pow’s they execute. People who cry about this video proclaim that most of russian soldiers wouldnt be like that, when they have no idea what the ratio is, they just claim it without any basis, and all of those russians would do the most horrible things, if they were given orders to do it, like to execute ukranian pow’s.

And i wonder if the same people crying about this here on reddit also cry in the comments of those vides about the executions of Ukranian pow’s, i doubt it.
