  5. No they won’t, they will just cry mental health and threaten to commit suicide unless their benefits are reinstated. You can’t physically force these people to work. You also can’t test for mental health, the same way there’s no test for a bad back. It’s something the GP has to just take their word for, sign them off long term and that’s enough to keep the benefits flowing.

  6. Not just young people. There’s a lot of old bums around too, they just know the system better.

  7. We already have a high employment rate. The concerns about people that are out of work is not well founded and it’s impossible to tell who can or can’t work.

    The best solution is to make sure people have a good incentive to work. Reduce UC if needed and increase wages.

  9. Haha, maybe ministers need to stop wasting time ranting about bad young unemployed people are and come up with creative solutions to delivering a functioning economy that incentivises and rewards work.

    But that would actually require some hard work, instead of recycled ancient Tory talking points… ironic.

  11. Just go back to purely paying housing benefit direct to the landlord, and the rest as food vouchers. I’m sure there’ll be happy to take a job then

  12. Some people, not all, but some just are never gonna want to work, I’d prefer to pay them pittance to keep them from robbing me. Plus I’d not want to work with most these fools, I wouldn’t want them serving me food, I wouldn’t want them on the phones if call to pay a bill or complain.

    It’s grim they get paid to do fuck all but it’s better then the alternatives, seems mad to pretend these people disappear if they don’t get benefits

Maybe if the UK manufactured/developed, and the government would stop selling companies to foreign companies i.e. Jaguar/Land rover, Hotel Chocolat, Cadburys, Arm Holdings, Rockstar, Rocksteady, Playground Games, Codemasters and many many others over the years we’d be fine, but instead the vast majority of companies get sold off.

    Why? Because we don’t support or nurture our companies, I.e. invest heavily into companies, help them grow.

    But instead everything has either been sold off, or waiting to be sold off.

  16. To be able to claim these benefits in the first place you should prove youre fit for work by volunteering X amount of hours a week. If you refuse to muck in then loose your benefits.

  17. The problem is people apply for jobs, prove to DWP that they have applied and got interviews, don’t attend the interviews or don’t take the jobs. My husband used to work for a social care provider and was forever interviewing prospective support workers, which is close to minimum wage. He spent whole days waiting for people to turn up for their planned interviews. Some would cancel and explain that they only applied to get their benefits, most just didn’t attend. He had no facility to grass them up.

  18. So who is going to hire these young people? I assume the majority of these will be uneducated or not working because of mental health reasons. Then you have industries that would have hired these workers all closing down or cutting back due to costs. Effectively retail shop work or hospitality. Then the attitude on some of these will most likely stink so turning up late if at all.
    Oh and dont forget companies now have to deal with day 1 rights so cant sack a worker for being awful. I do hope some of these are genuine decent people who want to work but I guess that would be a small percent of the real figures.

  20. 100% agree. Having a poor work ethic in your 20s means you’re likely to have a poor work ethic all your life causing more detriment to society

    Lots of people in their 50s and early 60s also looking for any excuse to retire early on medical grounds when actually they can do some work
