NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. (KTIV) – A Dakota Valley wrestler is fundraising to compete in a tournament held in the Nedtherlands.
McKenzie Scott, a freshman wrestler at Dakota Valley, was invited to represent the United States and wrestle in the 52nd annual Easter Wrestling Tournament. Scott, who began wrestling in 4th grade and earned her varsity letter as a 7th grader, would be the only wrestler on the team from the state of South Dakota.
“It means a lot, especially if I win matches. I think it just goes to show how much girls wrestling has improved in South Dakota and how far it’s come,” said Scott.
The price tag for the trip to the Netherlands is estimated around $3,000, Scott and her family have already raised roughly half of the money needed. To try and close out the fundraising, the family set up a free will fundraiser lunch at Skyline Bar in North Sioux City.
“We’ve got plenty of food, we have 200 pounds of pork loin that we smoked this morning and a bunch of different food for everybody to eat,” said Scott’s step father Tanner Rasmussen. “We’re doing free will donations; so people can come in, throw some money in the box and make themselves a plate.”
