Every example of a tragedy occurring has been on the back of the police failing to do their job in a consistent way. This is a sticking plaster “look I’m totally doing something votes plz” attempt that will do nothing but get this MP some column inches.
On an SGC a pump action shotgun can only hold 3 rounds, two in the magazine and one in the chamber. Your other alternative is an OU or side by side which can hold 2 rounds. An experienced shooter can reload an OU much faster than they can pop rounds into the pump gun’s tube, so any argument about safety here is complete bullshit.
This law is not about gun safety, it is about furthering this idiot politician’s career.
It all feels a bit much – what happened was awful, but I would hardly say we have a “problem” in this country with such shootings and I’m not convinced banning shotguns would help. I’m always a bit wary of the “If it just saves one life” sort of argument, because you can apply that to literally everything.
At some point somebody will do something stupid with a .22 rifle, and then what, do we have ban literally everything for everybody?
There is a counter – which is that all UK mass shootings have been perpetuated by legal gun owners, but I would argue that probably talks more to how hard it is to get a firearm and ammunition in this country. Certainly, the numbers of gun crime with legal weapons must surely pale into nothing compared to illegally held weapons.
More to the point, in this case, the Police almost certainly should have witheld it.
Changes to gun law need to include a focus on mental wellbeing and it should be reviewed regularly.
This part yes 100% agree
Banning anyone from having a shotgun at home is a bit far.
I’m a shotgun licence holder and this is fairly ridiculous concept. Statistically speaking licence holders are the most well behaved members of society.
The firearms licence is has a triangle of people involved, the applicant, the police and the doctors. If any one of the three parties raises a flag that they are not suitable for the licence then the police should turn up and reassess and remove the firearms where needed.
Firearms are literally kept in a safe place. The keys are always held on my person.
The issue with this tragedy is not the current laws but the administration that gave the gun back to the holder without robust mental health and social media checks being completed.
Pump Action shotguns (IIRC) are held on firearm licenses rather than shotgun certificates – which there are already a lot of controls over. Those controls need to be implemented correctly.
If someone has managed to get a certificate, then they’ve proved a necessity for them owning a weapon, which must already be stored correctly.
There are other locations weapons could be stored, but if it’s at a range this decreases safety, since ranges are usually rural, and away from people who’d notice attempts to break in, or storing them at an authorised firearms dealer, which needs them to be open, every time you need access
You can carry legally in UK? Does one have to be hunting and stuff to be permitted?
Per article this seems to specifically ban pump action guns only, not the dual barrel type commonly used for sporting.
surprised it’s not already tbh who tf needs a shotgun in their house?
There’s something stupid like 1.5million guns in the UK.
Almost all of them are unjustifiable.
Now get the guns out of the hands of criminals and mentally imbalanced.
The government has always done stupid things like this rater than dealing with the reson why it happened
Won’t happen, way too may legitimate reasons, farming being a huge one, especially for Devon and Cornwall.
This is a failure of the corrupt and useless Devon and Cornwall police, not a failure of gun laws that are pretty strict.
> “There’s no excuse for them to be kept by ordinary people at home and the sooner we have a common sense approach, the better.
Sure there is… Anyone who shoots clay pigeons at the weekend for a start.
Good, we need stricter gun control.
That guy should never have been allowed to own a gun.
Combat shotguns also have no place in our society, you don’t need a pump action to shoot pigeons or pheasants.
I was surprised to hear how easy it is to get one, and no doubt more people will be applying for a firearms licence now they know.
Can you imagine how many lunatic right wing conspiracy theorists have or will be applying for firearms licenses now?
Awful.
Pumps bad, semi auto just fine you couldn’t make it up typical nonsense from people who have no idea about firearms
”There is no need for guns in society” you say, see how well armed civilians shoot russians invading ukraine. Arm every responsible person and dictators have alot harder situation. Best regards// A well armed Swedish citizen
Knee-jerk reaction, punishing law abiding citizens for the abject failure of a certain police force.
What’s also ridiculous is how it’s pump only. So a pump is too dangerous to keep at home but my semi automatic is fine?
Lmao. And I though you guys can’t have any less rights.
“There’s no excuse for ordinary people to keep them at home”
Sure there is, I want one. That’s more than enough reason and muppets in parliament shouldn’t have a say in it.
I somehow doubt it’s a problem that can be solved by a ban.

Mr Pollard should ask his dealer if he can’t see a reason why one would want a shotgun
Would be better to ban r/mensrights
Since that’s the toxic cesspit that encouraged this lunatic to kill people.

A complete knee-jerk reaction, frankly.
