  12. While he got way more votes than people taught before, this is not even close to the end, there are about half more votes that need to be counted mainly from big cities that are less pro Georgescu or Simion.

  18. I am Romanian and I have no idea who this Georgescu guy even is. He doesn’t have a party backing him, was in no debates or interviews, had no internet presence until ~2 months ago, was very low in the polls until 2 weeks ago. This makes no sense whatsoever, all former extremist candidates started from the bottom, you at least knew who they were and he didn’t even win in the poor counties, he won all over the place.

    He is allegedly, all over tiktok, but a viral meme on tiktok is not enough to get the most votes. This is like if Deez Nuts or Harambe was leading the US election

  19. It’s a masive fraud, hope they catch up on how it was done. Most people didn’t even know how he looks like until yesterday. And now they say it’s all because of tiktok, like all the country is hooked on tiktok. From a nobody, no party, no campaingn, no tv appearance, he gets 22%? WTF.

    The entire country is in shock. This guy, Calin Georgescu, is a nobody who’s only known for his nazi like rhetoric and pro Russia views. He had nearly no campaign, he had no signs around the country, no rallies, he didn’t go to any debates, he’s simply not known. Now he’s the most popular candidate.

    Most people I know believe there was some Russian interference because it’s logically impossible for him to get so many votes. It’s a running joke now that people are Google-ing his name to see who he is.

    Edit: experts and the people say Calin’s main presence was on TikTok where multiple bots were pushing his propaganda. But even so, most Romanians are not on TikTok, so it’s a delicate situation.

  22. Guys, we don’t know what the hell happened, we were worried that Simion, an extremist, was going into the second round, but this guy, Georgescu, makes Simion look like a liberal, he came out of nowhere, he had 6% in the polls.

    I don’t use tik tok and never heard of him, but at this point I’m hoping the corrupt prime minister wins, though I’m not at all sure that will happen.

  26. I’m M (31), this if my first year where I didn’t had a first go to option and I’ve spent days reading, watching interviews and debates about the candidates. I’ve followed every survey and I have a graph merged with the evolution of more then 15 surveys in 2 months. Nothing, but absolutely nothing prepared me about this guy Georgescu. More then 90% of the country doesn’t know a shi*t about this dude. My circle of friends, nobody knows anything about him.

    I never heard about this guy Calin Georgescu until recently and I am very shocked the amound of votes he got.

    No survey showed him to be relevant at all, it took all of us as surprise.

    We expected to fight between Marcel Ciolacu and George-Nicolae Simion or Elena-Valerica Lasconi.

    But this is FAR WORSE and I fear for the future of my country at this point. We’re heading straight into dark ages with someone who’s into conspiracies, ezoterism, pseudoscience and natural treatments but not medicine.

    As I understand this guy got popularity due to this brainrot tiktok as he was not promoved elsewhere and strangely this helped him. I don’t have tiktok and that’s why I never heard of him.

    We’re doomed.

  36. I can understand this wave happening in Western countries—they’ve been in Europe longer, they’ve experienced prosperity, and have been in crisis for a while now. But Romania? What is it, are they tired of taking money from Europe? Do they want to go back to starving like they did under the USSR?
    I really don’t get it. They’re literally passive beneficiaries, taking money and only profiting from being in Europe.
    At some point, I’d almost wish for some of these countries to go back under the USSR.

  37. there is no poll that gave him more than 5% of the vote, literally everyone I know, people that live in the rural and people from the capital, 2 polar opposites have never heard of him before last month, this is insane, the man is literally currently being judged for “publicly promoting racist, xenophobic, fascists doctrines” and “promoting the cult of personality of a person guilty of genocide and war crimes” and yet he beat the PSD hegemony

  46. No one knows what the hell is going on but I will try to explain the political scene

    So we have an establishment (PNL from EPP + PSD from S&D) that’s very corrupt and has a really solid grip on power (they own the justice system, institutions, police, army, secret services, television, etc). But at the same time they are extremely pro-European.

    The far right/ pro russian camp has basically no real power, they are being used as a scarecrow to keep votes from going to the more reformist forces (USR from RENEW) which are also extremely pro European.. They even disqualified one of the pro russian presidential candidates in order to shift votes in such a way that the current prime minister wins the presidential elections.

    So there was never any worry about any far right candidate, we were only afraid these guys will grab even more power for themselves and it would become even harder to remove them from power. But now this guy appears out of nowhere and goes from 1% in the polls to 1st place in the presidential elections in a matter of days or weeks, using a massive TikTok campaign. I am reiterating here the establishment has abused their power before in order to eliminate political competition, but no one seems to bother him now. So that’s why it’s really strange, we don’t know if this is the result of some russian disinformation campaign, if he’s being pushed from the inside with yet unknown reason, or something else.

    But what we can say is that he probably won’t win the elections, somehow in a weird twist of events the reformist candidate is now the favourite which we would have never hoped, but it feels like the most important thing now is to find out what the hell is going on, and I hope we will find out soon

  47. I can only speak from my anecdotal perspective, but I don’t feel entirely surprised. My ex is Romanian and after a while, he opened up about his views. The stuff he told me was downright horrifying: fascist and pro Russia. I obviously broke up with him over this, much to his surprise. He argued that a lot of his relatives and his friends share the same views and that western Europe is just brainwashed and struck by left-wing “wokeism”. He and his friends, guys in their late 20s and late 30s (!), were radicalised through TikTok. Apparently Andrew Tate also has quite a big following there, and he’s one of the people pushing the narrative.
