Keira Knightley: ‘Turning 40? It looks rather great’

1. Keira Knightley is visibly buzzing. The actress has recently had her first weekend to herself since becoming a mother nine years ago. Her husband, the musician James Righton, and their two daughters were in Sicily for half-term but she had to stay in London for work. “I thought, I just want to be completely on my own. I want to do strange cultural things just for me and I want to walk really, really far, and I want to go and eat noodles,” she says. “It was amazing.”

I thought they were all brilliant,” she says of the Jilly Cooper TV adaptation. “The bonking is extraordinary.”

   Filming sex scenes has changed since Knightley was at the peak of her fame in the Noughties (when she did *Bend It Like Beckham*, *Love Actually* and the *Pirates of the Caribbean* films). These days actors are all used to intimacy co-ordinators carefully choreographing anything steamy. “The most famous sex scene that I’ve done, and the one that worked the best, was in *Atonement*,” Knightley says, referring to the 2007 movie. “That was brilliant because it was storyboarded.” It was certainly memorable: Knightley in a silk green dress and James McAvoy propped against a bookcase.

   There’s now more male nudity too. “It’s really upped. There’s a lot of bottoms. It’s amazing,” she says, grinning. “And, actually, female nudity has gone down quite a lot, which is interesting.”

   This is truly is an interesting development that she would say this – and it’s true: the statistics are shifting. We are now up to 40% of US women have watched online porn within the past 12 months (compared to about 60% of men). Women have also recently taken the lead in certain hardcore searches. Married women have taken the lead in one specific hardcore search term recently for the first time ever.

   We are on track for women to match men’s online porn watching by 2028. It appears Hollywood is noticing this shift as well with their nude scenes shifting.
