Hello!

I'm planning a road trip through Austria, with Salzburg to Vienna being a leg of the journey.

Would you recommend driving through backroads, or simply using the A1? Toll is not a problem obviously.

Thank you!

  1. Take the A1 and take breaks at specific viewpoints you want to visit. You‘ll see enough landscape staying on the Autobahn

  2. I would recommend the route via Bad Ischl/Gmunden, very beautiful route, especially the Traunsee

  3. If you want to get to Vienna as fast as possible, the obvious choice is the Autobahn A1. The thing is – it’s not really a seight to behold. Bare in mind, to be allowed to drive on the motorways/ Autobahn in Austria, you will need a motorway ticket (“Autobahn Vignette”).

  4. I think that mostly depends on your liking. Usually google maps has a pretty good idea how long it will take you and usually also shows proper traffic. You will see a little bit driving only on the A1, but there are many parts where you have noise barriers and/or trees next to the road.

Also consider driving a part of the way on backroads and most of the part on the A1: e.g.: [https://maps.app.goo.gl/dxhG3q12mKUyHX43A](https://maps.app.goo.gl/dxhG3q12mKUyHX43A)

Be aware, that while the route along the lakes (the most southern route in your screenshot) has a great
landscape – mountains and lakes – it therefore also has lots of tourists in the summer, especially weekends. Expect slow traffic and many cars 🙂
